What affect could the Christchurch Earthquake have on rugby?
Following the devastating earthquake magnitude 6.3 which struck
Christchurch at a depth of 5km, the Hurricanes vs Crusaders match from
Westpac Stadium in Wellington could be postponed. Everyone in New
Zealand knows someone from Christchurch, but when the biggest sports
team based in Christchurch is involved in the middle of a competition,
it could be difficult for the team to get to Wellington and also to be
focussed. It was announced today that one of the Crusaders board was
killed among the estimated 65 dead already, but no players are directly
affected.
It is hard to know if Christchurch will be up to hosting any fixtures
for a while either with a Pike River Coal Mine disaster relief match
coming up shortly for another devastating event which hit the Crusaders
catchment area. It has been a tough 6 months for the top half of the
South Island!
The future of anyone wanting to live in Christchurch, let along play
for a Christchurch based sports team must be becoming a factor given
the hundreds of earthquakes which have hit in the last six months. Who
wants to live somewhere so dangerous?
Christchurch is also supposed to be hosting several Rugby World Cup
matches, with two Quarter Finals scheduled for early October. It is
hard to know how the facilities, grounds, accommodation and everything
will survive this latest episode, let alone any further earthquakes.
Finally, other sports teams and fans love to hate the Crusaders and
Canterbury mainly because of their ability to take players from other
teams and areas and turn them into superstars. They also have the
ability to win titles and matches all the time. Did I mention the one
eyed loud mouth Canterbury fans? Anyway, despite this love/hate affair
with have the Canterbury province, we wouldn't wish this horrific event
on anyone. Sport is one thing, but unlike this it is not a matter of
life or death. We hate seeing Canterbury like this, our thoughts and
prayers here at Rugby Tips go out to everyone in the Canterbury region.
