Scotty Donaldson wonders about some of the refs calls in the Chiefs vs Highlanders game. What do you think?

While the Chiefs deserved to win in the end thanks to some amazing defence close to their own tryline, there were some interesting refereeing and TMO calls in the Round 6 Super Rugby match between the Chiefs vs Highlanders. Tim Nanai-Williams scored a try which went back to the TMO showing what looked like a Chiefs hand knocking the ball forward out of the hand of Josh Bekhuis. Tim Nanai-Williams was eventually awarded the try.

Ironically in the 63rd minute Ben Smith did something similar to a Chiefs player in the Highlanders half and it was ruled a knock on. The Chiefs got a penalty from the next play. Is knocking the ball out of the hands of a player considered a knockon.

I am wondering why the TMO wasn't used for the intercept try which Colin Slade almost scored? It was difficult to tell if he was onside, but the referee didn't even go to the TMO.

When Andrew Horrell lost the ball forward while grounding it before the tryline, Chris King then picked it up and kicked it down field. The Highlanders were set to gain a big territory advantage out of this kick, but the referee went to the TMO and it confirmed that it was lost forward in front of the line. What happened to the advantage law?

Interested to hear your thoughts as I thought the Highlanders were a bit unlucky. Can the players ask for the TMO to be used?

	4 . The Swede Eaters 23 Mar 2013 06:30 PM I agree. I am a Highlanders supporter, but sometimes it is the allowing or disallowing of a try that can particularly make or break the game for one team. I thought the Chiefs defence was impressive and it was interesting to see Hoeata holding back Liam Messam before Smith scored his try. It is a frustrating time for Highlanders fans when we are competitive but ultimately can't put away our opportunities. This was the first game I have watched where the TMO was used for such important/interesting calls. It did make things interesting. The Chiefs are a good side and even when up against it, they did enough to win. That first half was especially demoralising given the Highlanders domination, yet the Chiefs were winning when the halftime oranges were handed around. Oh well, bring on the Reds!
	3 . Bulpil 23 Mar 2013 07:52 AM Chiefs try: a Highlander on his back in the loose tried to place the ball backwards. Since I thought the ref blundered, I paid close attention to the replay. There was a Chief hand swinging but I believe safe to say it did not connect. What happened thereafter was without a doubt a try. The H'lander try: the Chiefs' defending loose forward was clearly held back by the H'land loose forward opposing him. That doesn't mean the Chief would have been successful, if allowed to try and stop Smith. My take on the last two incidents you mention, are that the decisions were questionable. But I would not want players having conferences on field to decide whether to refer some incident to a TMO. That will be the end of rugby. There were even more incidents that were not noticed, ignored or whatever it is the referee and his assistants are doing. Allowing the players access to the TMO is not the answer.

	1 . deep 23 Mar 2013 12:49 AM I believe you to be a bit of a one-eyed Highlanders supporter! But agree in many respects as there were an unusual amount of very close calls on point scoring situations. A different 'bounce of the ball' on the night and there could have been quite different - from a win to the Highlanders, to a big win by the Chiefs. Ultimately I think the score reasonably reflected the game.
