Scotty Donaldson looks at The Rugby Championship Round 1, what changes would you make to your team if any?
The Rugby Championship has started with predicted victories by the All Blacks and Springboks over the Wallabies and Pumas respectively. These results were hardly in doubt as both sides developed early leads which they never really looked like relinquishing.
The All Blacks beat the Wallabies 27-19, after leading 18-10 at halftime.
The referee Alain Rolland (Ireland) played an important part in the match by stifling the game by blowing up for heaps of penalties. Both sides looked rusty with the main disappointment for the All Blacks being the lack of cohesion of the massive midfield of Sonny Bill Williams and Ma'a Nonu. Israel Dagg was the best All Black. The Wallabies made plenty of basic handling mistakes, with Kurtley Beale having a disappointing game by his standards. Veteran Nathan Sharpe was my choice for Australian player of the match. Both teams have plenty to work on for next week. The All Blacks last minute penalty denied the Wallabies of a bonus point.
I wonder if the All Blacks should have brought on Aaron Cruden because Dan Carter had a mixed bag with his passing, while I wonder if Hosea Gear should be replaced by Julian Savea. Would you change any of the All Blacks who while they won, still have plenty of areas to work on?
The Springboks got out to a comfortable first half lead against Argentina before winning 27-6 against Argentina. The game reached a stalemate in the second half as the plucky Pumas stopped conceding points and the Springboks didn't get a four try bonus point, but couldn't take any chances themselves.
The Springboks have lost Bismarck Du Plessis to injury while Australia has lost David Pocock. Both of these guys are world class players and so these injuries could cost their teams. The All Blacks and Springboks are the teams to beat at this stage of the Rugby Championship, although they still have plenty of work to do. Argentina have shown that their defence is decent, even though their attack still has plenty to work on. The Wallabies may struggle this season with their young team. I wonder if their forward pack can handle the Springboks and Pumas especially away from home. I wouldn't be surprised if Argentina beat Australia in Argentina later in the competition.
What were your thoughts on the Rugby Championship Round 1? What changes if any, should your team make?
