Scotty Donaldson provides analysis into which teams and countries have the best overall records since Super Rugby began in 1996, what do you think?
Super Rugby has been around since 1996 and the graph above shows the "Overall Country Placing Moving Average". New Zealand dominates with the overall average placing being sixth since Super Rugby began. Australia were initially the best performed nation until expansion saw their depth tested and their sides weakened. The introduction of the Force and Rebels not only dragged the average down, but also started hurting some of their other teams who lost players to the big bucks of these teams. South Africa's total average placing is 8th while Australia's is 9th.
New Zealand teams overall average is the best, but it is interesting to look at how the Crusaders are such consistently good performers after finishing last in 1996. The Blues are still second best in New Zealand thanks to some great performances in the first decade of the competition. Interestingly, the Chiefs have only just recently overtaken the Highlanders thanks to their great Super Rugby competition win in 2012. The Chiefs look like overtaking the Hurricanes, while the Highlanders are no longer able to maintain their position following some great results in the late 1990s.
Australia's decision to expand on their initial three teams in Super Rugby has cost them as the Force and Rebels have struggled since their inclusion and the lack of depth in Australia has meant that some of their stronger sides have lost some of their depth to the big bucks of the new teams. The Reds were strong at the start of Super Rugby, but have only reached those lofty heights again more recently. The Waratahs and Brumbies are usually solid performers.
Have your say!

The Sharks are the best overall side in Super Rugby, although the Stormers have improved significantly after a bad start in 1996. The Bulls are also very close following their strong performances in more recent seasons. South Africa kept changing the way they picked their teams and which teams they included. They usually have three good teams and the other two teams struggle, although the Cheetahs have improved this season. The poorly performed Cats in this graph were also named the Lions more recently.
What do you think of these interesting graphs featuring Super Rugby overall placings moving averages is interesting. It shows that New Zealand has more overall strength, while Australia has three good teams and South Africa have had three genuine contenders over the years.
