Should Rugby World Cup's important final round of pool play be synchronised to avoid the prospect of match fixing or collusion based on previous results. Scotty Donaldson looks at if it is necessary at the Rugby World Cup?
Should the all important final round of deciding pool matches be synchronised to avoid collusion at the Rugby World Cup? Are we naive to think that match fixing and corruption involving bookies doesn't take place in rugby? The FIFA World Cup final matches in each pool take place at the same time so that teams can't alter the way they play based on how other results have already gone. Do you think the rugby can be fixed the same way that football or even cricket can be? I assume it can be, especially if goal kickers are involved. There is also the opportunity to make money on first scoring play, just ask Ryan Tandy the rugby league player who supposedly gave away a penalty intentionally after people had put money on penalty goal as first scoring play.
The Scotland vs England match takes place before the Argentina vs Georgia match meaning that if England beat Scotland then Argentina will know that they don't have to thrash Georgia. This has major ramifications for all sorts of betting odds and money being placed on the game and in professional tipping competitions. Argentina would only just have to beat Georgia and wouldn't have to take risks by scoring four tries and getting a bonus point. Do you think rugby players would sink to these levels if they had been offered money to give away some soft penalties and let the Georgian kicker score the first penalty goal or something? Do you think that rugby is above this? I think rugby is more of an upper class sport in most countries and so people wouldn't sink to such low acts as fixing results.
Other competitions like the Top 14 rugby competition in France and the English Premier League have synchronised games in the final round of matches, is it time for the Rugby World Cup to do the same?
The problem is that doing this would mean that fans would only be able to watch one match live at a time and would miss half of the matches. This would half the television audience that the Rugby World Cup would otherwise get. I think this is the reason why they don't do this at the Rugby World Cup.
I also wonder if you could go into a rugby game as half hearted as other sports? In cricket I would suggest it would be easier to not give 100%. You could miss a straight delivery and claim you didn't have a chance to play yourself in. In other sports, especially rugby individuals could hurt themselves if they go into tackles half hearted.
In conclusion, I would suggest that there isn't a need to synchronise Rugby World Cup matches because rugby is a different sport with a better class of people involved and it would reduce the number of fans watching matches. Mind you, I think that it would be naive to think that a bookmaker named Gupta hasn't tried it on with a rugby player at some stage!
