The AB's have the Trinations in the bag. Pity the same can't be said for the big RWC trophy up for grabs right after.
Weeeeeelllllll...
...before the weekend I was thinking that the Wallabies were a dangerous outfit, possibly even the single biggest threat to an AB's victory dance in the upcoming RWC. But having fallen off my chair in a massive fit of laughter after seeing what the Samoans did I'm not so sure. I'm thinking this must be a Mr Deans diversion to get the green and gold under the radar so they can spring a surprise in coming games?
In all seriousness, a quality top tier international team should not let the Samoans through like that, no matter whether a friendly hit out. And it does ask some questions about where the Aussies are really at. No disrespect to Samoa meant.
The first clash in the Trinations may not provide many more answers, as this damaged bunch will be taking on a South African B side. Two teams pretending to go for glory, but really with primary focus well concentrated on the series 2 months from now.
We know the All Blacks will give it their all, they always do, every game, and that is what helps to make them a special team. Take a look at at this YouTube compilation of the AB's unbeaten romp through last year's Trinations where a bunch of great tries was scored.
This year Henry & Co have opted for about 10 fullbacks and minimal out-and-out wingers in the squad. While all this crew can adapt and play well on the wing, one wonders if there is enough genuine strike-power in tow to create space out of nothing. Something that will for sure be needed at the business end of this season. It would be great to see another compilation like the above result from the new mix of players.
Regardless of all the poker-faced tricks that will be pulled during the coming, much shortened series, there's going to be some great games. There's a ton of exciting new blood coming through, and the new combinations will provide an entertaining battleground as everyone tries to figure themselves in this precursor to the big event.
For us fantasy competitors, the trick will be figuring through what line-ups will be fielded, and what combinations will dominate. Looking forward to it, let the series begin!
