Scotty Donaldson looks at the IRB's proposed law changes.
The International Rugby Board (IRB) are trying to change the laws of
rugby slightly, with the biggest proposed change to be a bigger
involvement of the Television Match Official (TMO). This is great
because if you have the technology, you should use it. The other laws
to be trialled globally mainly involve efforts to speed the game up at
the ruck and increasing options with teams having the lineout option
instead of a scrum in some situations.
There is also the ability to include an eight man bench with a full
frontrow on the sidelines. We have seen several games in Super Rugby
this season where a prop has been been substituted and then another prop
has been injured which required a substituted prop to return to the
field. There have also been some cases of "golden oldies" scrums where
the scrums were de-powered because of a lack of fit props.
The new trial laws will test the depth of props in teams.
What do you think of the new rugby laws which are set to be trialled globally?
Full details of the law changes are listed below.
