Scotty Donaldson previews Super Rugby Round 3 action. Who are you picking?
Super Rugby Round 3 is here and it is worth looking at the draw to see who to pick this week in fantasy and virtual competitions. One glance over the draw and you instantly realise that there are no games for the Brumbies, Highlanders or Kings, while the Chiefs and Bulls look to have the easiest matches and therefore these teams should be backed.
Round 2 threw up wider margins than anticipated, with the Sharks seven point win over the Cheetahs, the closest result. It seems that the matches seemed far more open and high scoring than other years or is it just my imagination? The Highlanders vs Chiefs game was played at such a fast pace, that you could be excused for thinking that the season was in full swing.
There are two easy to pick results this week, with the Chiefs and Bulls red hot favourites, but the other four matches are harder to pick. The Blues won well last weekend against the Hurricanes and have a game under their belts as they host the Crusaders. The Reds vs Hurricanes will be the first gauge of the difference between the New Zealand and Australian conferences. The Reds are tough to beat at home, even without Genia and Horwill, while the Hurricanes were erratic last week at home. The Chiefs should win a high scoring match over the Cheetahs who usually lack defence but don't lack heart. The Waratahs should be too strong for the Rebels at home, but it won't be pretty. The Bulls should have too many guns at altitude for the lowly Force. The Sharks host the Stormers and there is usually not much between these two heavyweights of the competition.
For me, the Reds vs Hurricanes game is the toughest to pick.

Here are ten players to purchase for www.testrugby.com Super Rugby Round 3, although some of these guys will have the bye in future weeks, so this must also be considered.
1) Luke Jones (Rebels) - He was the top scoring lock last week and is extremely cheap. He has the benefit of playing at blindside flanker this week and so will be required to get around the field.
2) Gareth Anscombe (Chiefs) - Gareth Anscombe was brilliant last week and should be kicking plenty of goals against the Cheetahs. The Chiefs should score plenty of tries and so Anscombe at fullback could also dot down.
3) Tim Nanai-Williams (Chiefs) - This guy scored plenty of points last week and if he can repeat that form, he should score plenty of tries against the hapless Cheetahs defence.
4) Sam Cane (Chiefs) - Cane was dynamic last week for the Chiefs against the Highlanders and should flourish this week.
5) Ed Quirk (Reds) - Quirk is an undervalued player who has thrived playing for the Reds this season. He is the top scoring loose forward.
6) James Parsons (Blues) - This bargain priced Blues hooker was outstanding against the Hurricanes last week. He was the top scoring frontrow player.
7) Patrick Lambie (Sharks) - Lambie looks odds on to be one of the top www.testrugby.com points scorer at the end of the competition.
8) Pierre Spies (Bulls) - The Bulls should dominate the Force this week and Pierre Spies will be dangerous off the back of the Bulls pack.
9) Morne Steyn (Bulls) - Morne Steyn should get big haul of points this week and so he should be in the points.
10) Steven Luatua (Blues) - This blockbusting player is athletic, mobile and massive. He is also a great ball runner and despite being listed at lock, will play on the side of the scrum and is relatively cheap.
The Crusaders are also a great option given that they will only increase in value since they haven't played yet. Watch for Kieran Read, Sam Whitelock and whoever kicks goals, either Dan Carter or Tom Taylor.
