Scotty Donaldson reviews Super Rugby Round 15. Do you agree with him?
Super Rugby Round 15 was a strange round with most matches finishing with the expected victors, but the South African derby matches threw spanners in the works with the Stormers defeating the Bulls and the Lions upsetting the Sharks.
Like the Sharks, the Brumbies and Chiefs struggled against a lower placed team in the Rebels and Blues, while the Hurricanes and Crusaders won by far bigger margins than predicted.
Did you know that only 2.6 percent of SuperBru punters picked the Lions to beat the Sharks and I wonder how many of them were default picks? This must have been one of the biggest upsets of the season and could prove to be a costly defeat for the Sharks, while the Stormers were only backed by about thirty percent of punters.
The role of the Television Match Official (TMO) must surely be under scrutiny following this weekend and there surely needs to be more ability for the TMO to tell the referee of forward passes or knock ons before a try is scored. The Crusaders were lucky because of that and Steve Walsh's liberal refereeing. There were also situations where the TMO was asked if there was any reason why the referee should not award the try and this also needs to be changed in my opinion because some referees say this and others don't when sometimes there is doubt if a try has been scored. Some referees give benefit of the doubt to the attacking team and others don't!
The final three rounds will be difficult to pick with so many crucial matches which could go either way (this is great for punters who are behind in tipping competitions). We have three weeks off in anticipation, but don't forget that the Sharks, Blues and Waratahs have Round 16 off, so get rid of these players now. There are so many derby matches in the final three rounds which will not only test the teams, but also the punters. The Chiefs for example, play the Highlanders, Crusaders and Hurricanes. They will do well to win all three of these. It will be interesting to see how the break affects the form of the teams.
Hot
The Crusaders and Hurricanes looked hot during Round 15 Super Rugby. The Lions victory was so unexpected.
Not
The Highlanders, Sharks and Waratahs had disappointing defeats during Super Rugby Round 15. The Sharks defeat at the weekend was probably the most costly.
