Scotty Donaldson looks at the Super Rugby Round 5 results. Did you pick the upsets?
Super Rugby Round 5 has finished and many punters were left with egg on their faces (me included) following several upsets. The Force's 19-12 defeat of the Reds was the biggest upset with only one percent of tipping website SuperBru punters picking this result. Interestingly using the overall community statistics, only two out of the six Super Rugby Round 5 winners were picked by over 50 percent of punters. This is a reoccurring theme following last round when four out of seven results were upsets. This means that there is plenty of money to be made by sports betting, while if you can pick the correct matches and that is a big "if" then you can make up ground in your Super Bru tipping competition.
The Chiefs victory over the Kings was probably closer than most people expected, but at least 97 percent of punters got one right over the weekend.
Both the Crusaders and Cheetahs were selected by just under half of the punters, so their victories weren't really upsets, although at the New Zealand TAB, the Crusaders were hot favourites for their win, while you would have got $3 for every $1 invested, so there is plenty of money to be made. The Hurricanes despite being slight underdogs at the NZ TAB were picked by 70 percent of Super Bru punters, although there is a fine line between pleasure and pain at times with both the Highlanders and Waratahs losing nailbiting matches.
The Brumbies were only backed by 29 percent of SuperBru punters and were the outsiders at the TAB. The thing that shocked so many people about both this result and the Crusaders win over the Bulls, was the large margin of the victory.
In the Super Rugby Tips tipping competition, Damage did the damage this week to overtake ROYEE at the top of the rankings. He was the most improved manager even though the Blues weren't playing! Rolstoelli and Mandreth also improved greatly, even though it may have been in a desperate attempt to get back into the game by picking plenty of upsets. With the current stats you wonder if it is actually beneficial to pick upsets in every game given how many upsets there have been recently?
