The TMO has been overused so far in Super Rugby 2013. I would rather see it used only when necessary. What do you think of using a referral system like cricket or tennis?
The Television Match Official (TMO) is being used too much in Super Rugby and it is becoming annoying. I was initially a fan of the introduction of the TMO, but I feel it is being overused and taking too much time during matches, with some games finishing about ten minutes late. Steve Walsh lead the charge by using the TMO constantly a few weeks ago when the Highlanders kept asking for it to help stop their losing slide. Unfortunately, it didn't work! I thought the TMO would be used sparingly to determine tries, but it is also being used for foul play, penalties or simply going back to check if someone was out. It is great having the technology available but I think there needs to be a referral system like in cricket or tennis where players get a certain number of unsuccessful referrals at their disposal. Do you think this would work? You get two unsuccessful TMO referrals per match.
It is interesting seeing tries disallowed by the TMO which looked like tries at full pace. Previously the benefit of the doubt went to the attacking team, but I have seen several tries in recent weeks like Luke Romano (Crusaders) vs the Force and Hosea Gear for the Highlanders against the Brumbies where it looked more than likely that a try was scored, but instead of the referee asking the TMO "is there any reason why I can't award a try?" the referees are becoming more cautious for fear of making a mistake when they have the technology to use. The thing is that often the camera view or definition means that the TMO is in a worse position to make a call.
What do you think of my idea of a referral system in rugby? Do you like the TMO system the way it is?
