What can be done about the differing interpretations applied to the laws by northern and southern hemisphere referees?
I found it very interesting this past weekend to listen to the comments of some of my northern hemisphere friends with regard to the 1st test in the B&I Lions series.
Most people in the southern hemisphere seemed to be very positive about the game, and more particularly the type of game being played. It was by and large and open and exciting game of rugby. For me, the referee had a lot to do with this.
Yet my northern hemisphere friend seemed intent on criticizing the referee? One person even commented that it was "super 15 refereeing".
I know that laws are always given their context by those that interpret them, but there do seem to be some glaringly different interpretations between the hemispheres.
I suppose the question for me is, shouldnt the IRB be doing something to stop this? Move referees around and allow northern refs to do super 15 games while allowing southern refs to do the heineken cup? What can be done to standardize the interpretation of the laws by referees?
