Here are the top players overall by average points per round. This team is very much New Zealand dominated. Do you agree with these players?
Super Rugby gets close to the halfway point so I thought it would be interesting to see the top overall www.testrugby.com points scorers from the first six rounds of Super Rugby 2011 based on average points per game.
It is interesting to see the makeup of this team with seven New Zealand players, four South Africans and only one Australian.
Highlanders Kade Poki and Adam Thomson and Crusader Sonny Bill Williams (all pictured above) average over 400 points per game, while there are four Crusaders and three Sharks players.
4 Crusaders
3 Sharks
2 Highlanders
1 Blues
1 Lions
1 Brumbies
The forwards in the Team of the Competition are an assortment, while the New Zealand teams dominate the backs.
So what makes the best players in each position?
Frontrowers
Both of the top frontrowers have scored tries and are two of the best lineout forwards.
Locks
The best lineout forwards are all frontrowers. Locks are the lowest scoring players in the competition. Franco van der Merwe is one of the better tacklers around with 10 per game. Sam Whitelock is a victim of the Crusaders depth at lock and could have done better if he played 80 minutes per game.
Loose forwards
The impressive Adam Thomson has been one of the stars of the Super Rugby season so far. He averages over 400 points, and is the top tackler with 13 per game and one of the top "Go forward" players, while Willem Alberts is one of the best "Go Forward" exponents and also averages 10 tackles per game. Most top tacklers and "Go Forwards" are loose forwards.
Halves
Both Carter and Lambie are two of the leading goalkickers and are in two of the better teams in the competition. They have both scored tries in the competition so far. Morne Steyn from the Bulls is one of the top tacklers and points for tackling is important for the halves.
Centres
Sonny Bill Williams has the highest average of any player and he is the king of "Go Forward". He is also the man with an assist per game. There are a few centres amongst the top tacklers including Anthony Faiangaa and Wynand Olivier. Matt Giteau is a goal kicking centre who has bagged a few tries. He has also made some linebreaks and tackles. Waylon Murray and Shaun Treeby are in the top ranked "Go Forward" players.
Outside backs
Unheralded pacy wingers Kade Poki and Sean Maitland have the best records as outside backs. They have both scored plenty of tries despite Poki only playing three matches, while Maitland is the top try scorer with seven. Both of these guys are great "Go Forward" players with their pace. It is one way that outside backs contribute.
