What's with the England squad turning out in Black at the RWC?
Those mongrels are turning up on our doorstep for the biggest occasion in NZ's rugby history, and masquerading as us! Can this be for real?
Yes I'm a kiwi, and proud of it. I've been an avid rugby fan since my old man tossed a rugby ball into my cot, and the pinnacle of the dream has always been black.
Sid Going used to live up the road from me, on a farm in the back-blocks of nowhere in the far north of NZ. Once I was even lucky enough to enjoy a morning of good old fashioned barefoot rugby in the frost on Moerewa's Simpson Park, with Sid straight off the farm in his gumboots as our ref. Of all the refs I ever had through those early years, he's the only one I remember. It's obvious, he was an All Black, and no ordinary one at that.
The All Blacks uniform is much more than team colours, it's a source of national pride. It represents the most successful rugby team in the history of the sport, set aside that damn elusive RWC. Black is also etched into our national sporting culture, just look at the Black Caps, Tall Blacks, Black Ferns, Black Socks, Black Sticks... At international competition it is a colour that has always been 100% distinctive and owned by NZ.
This is not new news to the English, and the timing of this decision is not in the least coincidental. It's a deliberate affront to the All Blacks, and the public of New Zealand.
It's also a loss to themselves. The strip is so far removed from their traditional uniform that they've lost their own identity.
It may not break any of the laws of the rugby world, but for me it smashes through the line of decency. I'm looking forward to the Puma's dishing out some fury on our behalf, and taking these impersonators to the cleaners in their first up showdown! I call on all southerners to find some blue and white stripes, and make the Argentinians our own for a day. Ha! |
