Super 15 Rugby Round 12 Review – 10 Things We Learnt
Super Rugby Round 12 taught us several things, here are 10 thing we learnt from Super Rugby Round 12;
1) The average winning margin in Super Rugby Round 12 was 10 points which now takes the overall average winning margin to just over 11 points.
2) The home advantage was strong with six out of seven teams winning at home. Overall 45/80 games have been won by the home team. The only exception was the win for the Waratahs over the Brumbies.
3) There were two major upsets in Super Rugby Round 12 with only three percent of tipsters playing SuperBru picking the Rebels to beat the Chiefs and eight percent picking the Cheetahs over the Stormers. More people picked the Brumbies than the Waratahs too, so that was also an upset. What a tough competition. Given that both the Rebels and Cheetahs are not really rated to advance to the Top Six, then beating quality teams like the Chiefs and Stormers shows just how tough this competition is. Victory over any team cannot be taken for granted.
4) Are the Crusaders and Sharks sunk? There are only six rounds left and both the Sharks and Crusaders have played 11 games and sit five and 10 points outside the Top Six. The Sharks are definitely sunk, but I don't think you can write the Crusaders off completely.
5) Who did the Chiefs miss more, Aaron Cruden or Brodie Retallick in their loss to the Rebels? It will be a true test of the Chiefs ability, winning without two world class, key players.
6) The Brumbies look to have got the speed wobbles with the Waratahs looking more like taking out the Australian conference.
7) Just when you thought that the Stormers had the South African conference stitched up, they lost to the Cheetahs. This opens the door for the Bulls and Lions to pounce.
8) How will teams rest their players? It is a real juggling act resting star players in Super Rugby 2015. Hopefully the Highlanders don't rest their three game-breakers in Malakai Fekitoa, Aaron and Ben Smith in the same game again. A good option would be resting Ben Smith after his concussion and then rest the other two for a game each on their tour of South Africa and Australia.
9) The triple bye rounds return which is difficult for those playing fantasy rugby games. The Chiefs, Bulls and Cheetahs while the next round there are byes for the Crusaders, Force and Stormers.
10) Can the Hurricanes run continue? The Hurricanes upstaged the Crusaders in Round 12, this now leaves the Hurricanes sitting with a handy buffer over the Chiefs, after the Chiefs lost to the Rebels. There are still some New Zealand derbies to be played, but the Hurricanes look like they will be hard to stop.
