The hypothetic new and improved Super Rugby format

The current Super Rugby Format and the resulting Rugby Championship format has been taking flak from most corners. Too much rugby, too few byes and unfair scheduling of byes, different conference strength, some countries wanting more representation. It's an ongoing list of complaints. We're still watching (and choosing our sides) so it can't be all that bad right?

Moving to my point. I believe we could learn a trick from UEFA and have two competitions. The 1st division (or whatever suitable name would apply) and the 2nd. 1st division is composed of the top 4 sides from SA, NZ and AUS, basically the old Super 12. The 2nd division would be teams 5 & 6 from SANZAR (6 teams) and 6 teams from Argentina, Pacific Islands and maybe even Japan. Each division would have 12 sides meaning a minimum of 11 and a maximum of 13 games (instead of the current 16-19 games). 1st division could play on Friday & Saturday and 2nd division on Wednesday and Thursday. If SANZAR don't approve of midweek games then 1st div can play Saturday and 2nd div on Friday. Bye weekends would be for an entire division with the alternate division stretching over Friday and Saturday for that weekend. I'd like an automatic promotion relegation for the top 2nd div/bottom 1st div sides. And initially only SANZAR teams in the 1st div as Super Rugby is their brainchild.

In my view the result would be, more rugby on TV, less rugby for players, more byes, expanding rugby in the SANZAR countries and developing the surrounding regions and of course, more time for the international fixtures . It might sound rather outlandish but I really believe it could answer many of the current conundrums facing our rugby calendar. What do you think?

I know the 2nd division wouldn't be as popular. But with the correct marketing, involvement of more, "exotic," teams from around the globe and the correct scheduling, it could work. If I knew it was Friday and there was only 2nd div rugby between Samoa and the Force, or a Japanese team and the Kings, I'd definitely watch it. But there should never be a choice between 1st and 2nd div games, almost everyone would go 1st. Plus the Japanese Market is ripe for expansion. How well is their league doing?

Been thinking along the same lines for a while - SANZAR need to learn less is sometimes more!

Too many games and ther belief that more local derbies would be better has definitely backfired.

I agree with two the idea of two conference rarer than two divisions.

I think I've team from each of te Islands and a cpl of from Argy would be fantastic. Possibly one from Japan would be good as well. Hopefully the IRB can help out with facilities in the PIs - help each country out with a good quality stadium and each tickets to encourage attendance - yes not much money from the gate but who wouldn't want to see Island teams playing in SR? And seein those counties grow as a consequence of having a Super team!

Maybe seed the team to keep the top team evenly spread out. And also have top four tops for a quarters, semis and finals - total games 14!

Nice idea, but don't believe there would be enough interest around the 2nd Div, and therefore not enough $$ would be found to support it. It's not like Europe where games are a quick train ride away.

Money is the issue, as well as "the bigger it is and the more of it we have, the better" philosophy... I love the idea of a 2nd div or even two separate conferences where the top teams in each play playoffs to qualify for a Super Final (like american football) but chances are slim they'll ever consider that.
