The Wallabies could be forced to name usual utility forward Radike Samo on the wing for their match against Russia due to an injury crisis. Scotty Donaldson looks at the crazy situation and ramifications for managers and wonders who else has done this in rugby union?
In an amazing show of versatility Wallabies lock and Number Eight could start on the wing against Russia in Australia's last pool match against Russia. He spent some of the second half there against the USA after an injury crisis hit the Wallaby backline. Samo used to play his rugby on the wing in the late 1990s, but now that he is in his mid thirties, it will be interesting to see if he still has the pace. It is lucky the Wallabies are only playing Russia, because Samo may get found out against someone better. Still, I wouldn't want to mark him, he is massive!
This could have major ramifications for www.testrugby.com managers with Radike Samo likely to score plenty of tries against the Russians from his position on the wing, even though he is listed as a loose forward. He won't make as many tackles as usual, he would probably get more opportunities to have one on one situations with defenders where you would back him to beat the defenders with ease and probably score some tries.
Which other players in the history of rugby have played at a high level in both the forwards and the backs?
Colin Bourke in New Zealand provincial rugby, while Eric Rush, Jonah Lomu did for a while, but it is hard finding people at international level in rugby union where the positions are quite specialised. It makes him a very useful player to have in the squad.
Do you know of any people who have played in both the forwards and the backs to a high level?
