What does the statement "give me a reason not to award the try" actually allow the TMO to rule on...
We had an interesting situation in the SA Conference this weekend withe the Lions vs Sharks and then the Bulls vs Stormers. The situation was at try time when the Ref asked the TMO the question, "Give me a reason why I can't award the try"
What is the TMO allowed to answer in this case? There is also the "Try, no try" question? The rules state that the TMO may only judge what happens in the in-goal area and not before the line.
Why have 2 different questions that could possibly mean the same thing. The Bulls Vs Stormers game had a classic situation where the ball was not grounded as it was clearly on top of the oppositions foot but when the question of "give me a reason why I can't award the try" was asked, the TMO didn't seem to be able to say "The reason you can't award a try is because the ball wasn't grounded"
In the Sharks vs Lions game, the commentators were up in arms because the TMO apparently didn't answer the question in the way he was allowed to. Surely teams want to win the game honestly and if they were on the other side of the decision they would also want the correct decision to be given. Who cares if the TMO doesn't only answer the question that was asked.
Why make it so confusing. Simply ask the TMO if it was a try or not. He can very quickly say and give an outcome.
