Why the Highlanders look so good this year.
The Highlanders have never been a physical side. They've realised that the game today is won and lost at the rucks, and they lack the physicality to really dominate a game in these areas. As such, they base their game plan on keeping the ball in the air. Having players in support all the time and rather than take the collision, they pop the ball up to the next player, and the next and the next.
This was especially effective against the Bulls because the Bulls decided they will avoid tackling this weekend. It gave the Landers more than enough time to spread the ball and keep it alive.
On the defense, they tackled as a team and relied on Thomson to win the turnover.
Expect the Highlanders to run the Stormers ragged next weekend.
The Stormers; its difficult to say what exactly is wrong there, because they are just not doing much at all. They still fail dismally to break the advantage line and they are relying totally on defensive structures to win them games. At least one coach is doing his job, but the attacking coach is absent!
Teams need to look at what the Sharks and Highlanders are doing. The top sides in the tournament at the moment.
