The Chiefs and Brumbies won, who did you pick?
Super Rugby Semi Finals 2013 were two tight and entertaining games, with the Chiefs and Brumbies winning by narrow margins. Most betting agencies would consider both of these results upsets and SuperBru tipsters agreed with only the desperate tipsters looking to gain points from upset results picking these results.
It is funny to think that the Chiefs were the top New Zealand conference team playing at home in a semi final as defending champions. Only 24 percent of SuperBru tipsters picked the Chiefs to beat the Crusaders and 11 percent picked the Brumbies to beat the Bulls.
Some things to consider from Super Rugby Semi Finals 2013,
1- In my opinion, the teams coached by the two best coaches in the Super Rugby competition made the final. The Brumbies coaches Jake White and Laurie Fisher and the Chiefs Dave Rennie and Wayne Smith did their homework and have drilled the two cinderella teams into great sides.
2- Why did the Bulls continue to kick for touch when there were points on offer through penalties? The Bulls up until then didn't mind scoring points through the boot of Morne Steyn, but they for some reason decided to go for the try. In finals you usually should take the points, although the Chiefs ironically turned down a shot at goal to go for the lineout which did lead to a crucial try to winger Lelia Masaga.
3) Who is the best first five eighth in New Zealand? Dan Carter has had the mantle of best first five eighth in New Zealand for ages, but Aaron Cruden showed that he is up to challenging Dan Carter for that title. I love Aaron Cruden coming off the bench for the All Blacks, but would have no problem with him starting.
4) Why was it that players in the Chiefs vs Crusaders game ended up looking like smurfs covered in blue paint? Initially I thought we just had bad television reception.
5) Why is it that the Crusaders and Bulls have great reputations for being favourites even if they shouldn't be? The Crusaders have been touted as favourites for the Super Rugby 2013 title, even though the Chiefs have been the team to dominate this season.
6) Amid huge tension in the predominantly Bulls crowd at Loftus Versfeld, TMO Shaun Veldsman gave the 'green light' to the Tevita Kuridrani try. He is a brave man given he surely must fear for his safety after that call which could have gone either way.
7) Why did we see empty seats in both Hamilton and Pretoria? Are people sick of rugby?
Who are you picking to win the Super Rugby 2013 final? It seems ridiculous that the Brumbies have to fly from Australia to South Africa to New Zealand in the space of a week. They are looking at changing the Super Rugby format to avoid this happening, but until then the Chiefs will be the favourites this week. It could come down to if Jake White can come up with a masterstroke again. It will be great to see Dave Rennie vs Jake White.
