Cruden, Carter, Barrett and Whitelock have all been ruled out of the All Blacks to play the Wallabies in Wellington. Who should start in the Number 10 jersey - Colin Slade or Tom Taylor?
Who will start in the All Blacks Number 10 jersey against the Wallabies?
The All Blacks will have to revert to starting their fourth choice first five in Saturday's second Bledisloe Cup test in Wellington.
With Dan Carter out with a calf injury, Aaron Cruden and Beauden Barrett have also been scratched with knee and calf injuries respectively.
Slade has played ten tests but was too inconsistent and shaky in them before a constant run of serious leg injuries. I would have more confidence with Taylor in the Number 10 jersey. Slade has had a career riddled with injuries including the one which saw him withdraw from the Rugby World Cup 2011. He has been average for the Highlanders up until the second half of Super Rugby 2013 and he will play for the Crusaders in Super Rugby going forward.
Tom Taylor has been a more consistent performer in recent seasons for the Crusaders, although he hasn't played any tests. I would go with Taylor as I believe that Colin Slade although he is only 25 is probably a step in the backwards direction since he has been tried and found wanting at test match level. He may have matured as a player, but I wonder if he is up to test match rugby?
Slade is more experienced than Taylor, but I would go for Taylor although the selectors may think otherwise with some experience at test match level being potentially preferable to none. Taylor is more of a utility and so could be useful on the bench.
Cruden will miss two to six weeks with a posterior cruciate ligament injury, while Barrett's slight calf strain is expected to be clear by the time they play Argentina on September 7.
Colin Slade and Tom Taylor will now vie for the number 10 jersey in the second test against Australia.
Lock Luke Romano has also been ruled out of the rest of the Rugby Championship with a groin tear.
Who do you want to see start in the All Blacks Number 10 jersey - Colin Slade or Tom Taylor?
This will give me a chance to wear my Standing for Slade t-shirt finally!
