Scotty Donaldson does some number crunching and sees whether the stats are an accurate reflection of the team of the Rugby Championship 2012.
The Rugby Championship 2012 is over and may I present The Rugby Championship 2012 Team of the Competition based on www.testrugby.com statistics. Do you agree with these statistics?
The All Blacks were dominant, while many people don't realise that Australia actually finished second, ahead of South Africa despite being anything but convincing. Argentina ran out of steam after some brave early season performances. The Springboks improved without Morne Steyn being the "hand-brake" in their backline!
There are some limitations with these statistics which are based on average score per game in www.testrugby.com points. This means that some players who were substituted regularly missed out on the opportunity to make this team. I also made the decision to separate the position categories, so for example Kieran Read the All Blacks star Number Eight was the second highest scoring loose forward, but I chose to separate positions into Number Eights and flankers so Richie McCaw and Francois Louw made it instead. It seems that the outside backs scored the most points out of any position with All Blacks Israel Dagg, Cory Jane and Julian Savea scoring healthy totals.
It is funny to see Ma'a Nonu and Sonny Bill Williams together in midfield given they were bad when they played there together. There are eight All Blacks, three Springboks, three Wallabies (ironically two tight forwards, but not surprising given these guys had to play plenty of minutes) and one Pumas player.
It is interesting to see the how the statistics change your view on who should be in the Rugby Championship 2012. Although I think they don't reveal everything.
Do you agree with the www.testrugby.com statistically based Rugby Championship Team of the Competition?
