Scotty Donaldson looks at the changes made to the Springboks to face the All Blacks this weekend.
The Springboks have named a huge pack to face the All Blacks and given that they have included kicking ace Morne Steyn it looks like they are going back to the traditional style of play.
The Springboks have bulked up their pack with the inclusion of Willem Alberts, Gurthro Steenkamp and Bismarck Du Plessis to face the All Blacks this weekend. It is hard to know if John Smit is just resting after the Springbok pack had plenty of questions asked of them late in the match against the usually vulnerable Wallabies pack. If the selection of Morne Steyn is anything to go by, then it looks like the Springboks will try and base their entire game and Rugby World Cup fortunes around the aerial kicking tactics that saw them dominate world rugby a few years ago. It is hard to know if those tactics can still be implemented effectively with the current interpretation of the tackled ball law making possession more important than it used to be.
Is this Springboks team over the hill? Are they too bulky and not fast enough to the breakdown? Will they bully the weakened All Blacks pack? Is the way back actually the way forward for South Africa?
Patrick Lambie starts at fullback in place of Franc Steyn because of injury.
South Africa: Patrick Lambie, JP Pietersen, Jaque Fourie, Jean de Villiers, Bryan Habana, Morne Steyn, Fourie du Preez, Pierre Spies, Willem Alberts, Heinrich Brussow, Victor Matfield (capt), Bakkies Botha, Jannie du Plessis, Bismarck du Plessis, Gurthro Steenkamp. Reserves: John Smit, Tendai Mtawarira, CJ van der Linde, Danie Rossouw, Ashley Johnson, Francois Hougaard, Butch James.
