Scotty Donaldson looks at Round 4 Super Rugby picks and wonders which match will be an upset?
There will be at least one upset in Super Rugby Round 4 2012, but the problem is picking the correct game and team and there is the potential like other rounds, for 2 or 3 upsets. Which game will produce an upset this week? Don't forget that there are only six games this Round with the Crusaders, Bulls and Lions having the week off, so sell players from these teams in your testrugby.com team.
Game 1 - Chiefs vs Brumbies
The Chiefs are playing out of their skins and have secured wins over the Blues and Crusaders. Their backs are amazing and their forwards are punching above their weight which is amazing given how many of their front row forwards have been injured this season. The Brumbies are somehow unbeaten despite struggling in both of their matches so far. Surely the difference in depth between New Zealand and Australian conferences will be exposed here. The Chiefs have lost the only match they have started as favourites in, against the Highlanders, can they win as the favourite?
Players to buy - Sonny Bill Williams, Liam Messam, Aaron Cruden, Richard Kahui, Mahonri Schwalger, Stephen Moore.
Bargain - Brodie Retallick
My pick - Chiefs by 10
Game 2 - Stormers vs Blues
This match is important for checking how good both the Stomers and Blues are. If the Stormers can win this match, they will prove that they deserve their spot as the leading South African team, while the Blues will be out to prove that last week's win over the Bulls was no fluke. This match has the potential to go either way. It is amazing how despite losing some great players like Jerome Kaino, Anthony Boric and Isaia Toeava they still defeated the Bulls. They are a different team with the brilliant Gareth Anscombe playing inside Ma'a Nonu and outside Piri Weepu. The Stormers return from the bye and it will be interesting to see how long it takes them out of first gear. Watch for the Blues to wear black armbands to acknowledge the death of New Zealand rugby legend Jock Hobbs who is Blues player Michael Hobbs' father.
David Raikuna has withdrawn with injury.
While I think the Blues can win, I am picking the Stormers as I don't think the Blues can handle them with so many players out injured.
My pick - Stormers by 3.
Players to buy - Keven Mealamu, Tiaan Liebenburg, Joe Pietersen, Andries Bekker, Chris Lowrey, Ma'a Nonu
Bargains - Gareth Anscombe, Eben Etzebeth.
Game 3 - Highlanders vs Hurricanes
This match has personal significance for me with my team the Highlanders playing the local team where I live, the Hurricanes. The Highlanders should be too strong and physical upfront for the Hurricanes. There are heaps of players and the coach from the Hurricanes region who are plying their trade with the Highlanders now. It will be annoying for the local fans, seeing the quality that their team let go in action. Guys in the Highlanders like Hosea Gear, Tamati Ellison, Aaron Smith, Nick Croswell will be looking to beat their old franchise team.
The Highlanders have had three tough matches so far, while the unfancied Hurricanes have nothing to lose and take the underdog tag into this match. The Highlanders won't be used to playing outdoors again! Both of these teams play best when they are underdogs, so it will be interesting to see if the southern men can win with that tag. The Highlanders haven't been named but will be missing Lima Sopoaga for this match.
Interesting match-up - TJ Perenara vs Aaron Smith.
My pick - Highlanders by 7.
Players to buy - Andrew Hore, Adam Thomson, Victor Vito, Andre Taylor
Bargain - Beauden Barrett, Phil Burleigh, John Hardie, TJ Perenara.
Game 4 - Waratahs vs Force
The Force got hammered last week and unfortunately are missing three of their better players for the long trip to Sydney. Expect the Waratahs to win this match easily to confirm the gulf in ability of some of the Australian teams. The Waratahs backs should get amongst the points.
My pick - Waratahs by 20
Players to buy - Tatafu Polutau-Nau, David Dennis, Daniel Halangahu, Adam Ashley Cooper, Nathan Sharpe, David Pocock.
Bargains- Tom Kingston, James Stannard, Nathan Charles.
Game 5 - Sharks vs Reds
The third best South African team plays Australia's top side in this match which will be an interesting litmus test. The Sharks have lost to the Bulls and Stormers, but beat the Lions and will be difficult to beat for the Reds. It will be interesting to see if the Reds can combat the brutish Sharks pack and out run the home team with their fleet footed, high pace game.
Radike Samo is playing at Number Eight and Mike Harris at inside centre so both of these players could be worth buying.
The Sharks haven't been named yet.
My pick - Sharks by 3
Players to buy - Bismarck Du Plessis, Patrick Lambie, Marcell Coetzee, Radike Samo,
Bargains - Mike Harris, James Hanson.
Game 6 - Rebels vs Cheetahs
Both of these teams got close to winning last weekend and it will be imperative for both of these teams to record their first wins. The Rebels look to be improving and I will give it to them to sneak home at home. The Cheetahs will be fired up after losing narrowly to the Brumbies, but if the Rebels can hold their own up front, then they should have enough class in James O'Connor, Gareth Delve and Kurtley Beale to win. Both teams would have targeted a win in this match at the start of the season. This one could go either way.
The Rebels are yet to be named.
My pick - Rebels by 3.
Players to buy - James O'Connor, Adriaan Strauss, Heinrich Brussouw, Gareth Delve, Hugh Pyle, Kurtley Beale.
Bargains - Philip Van Der Walt, George Earl, Willie Le Roux, Johan Goosen, Devon Raubenheimer.
