The cavalry has arrived for the Highlanders in the form of sharpshooter Mike Delany and loose forward Hale T-Pole, what if any implications are there for managers?
The Highlanders have received a boost to their Super Rugby 2012 campaign with news that Mike Delany and Hale T-Pole have been signed as injury cover. Both of these guys are in the twilight of their careers and have been playing in Japan, which makes you wonder about the long-term benefits of them being signed, but the Highlanders are in desperate need of a good Number Seven and first five, although I wonder if T-Pole is more of a Number Six? I also wonder if there will be any impact for www.testrugby.com managers?
T-Pole will provide great cover for the Highlanders with his loose forward utility, while Delany could be a more viable option if he starts ahead of Chris Noakes. T-Pole was a big points scorer when he was playing for Southland before he went to Japan as he is an effective ball carrier. Delany's goalkicking and reliability should mean he is a solid points scoring option. Plenty will depend on if either of these players start.
I have fond memories of T-Pole playing for Southland and he was also great for Tonga at the 2007 Rugby World Cup. He isn't the scavenger that John Hardie is though and I wonder if they would have been better served by someone like locals like Otago player Eben Joubert or even Tim Boys who can scavenge?
It is the same with Mike Delany. He is a reliable goalkicker and steady player, but I wonder if they could have found an exciting player like Waikato's Trent Renata or even someone like Counties man Baden Kerr or Otago's Glenn Dickson.
Do you think Delany and T-Pole will be testrugby.com options?
