South Africa will reintroduce a quota system for the Vodacom Cup, do you think there is still room for racism in sport?
South African Rugby boss Oregan Hoskins announced that teams in the Vodacom Cup will be required to field seven coloured players in their 22 man squads and five in their starting fifteen starting in 2014. This quota system is hoped to increase the number of coloured players making it into the Currie Cup and Super Rugby. It is interesting in this day and age that players are still picked on their skin colour rather than merit necessarily. This could potentially cost white players a spot in the Vodacom Cup competition, but these players will probably find contracts overseas.
Is there room for racism in rugby still in 2013?
While I can see where the bosses are coming from by wanting to help young coloured and black players get into top level rugby, I wonder if this is the best way to do it? Most other countries are so used to players being selected on merit, so it is a funny idea for most to the fathom.
For the record, the Vodacom Cup runs at the same time as Super Rugby and works as a developmental competition. I wonder if New Zealand has enough depth for a similar competition to run at the same time as Super Rugby? I also doubt New Zealand has the depth to allow a certain number of coloured players into each team.
There were days when the South African Super Rugby teams had a quota system, but there were times when some players included were out of their depth at that level of rugby and it can become dangerous especially in front row positions.
Should South African rugby go back to a quota system for coloured and black players? Do you agree with this decision?
