The Western Force have complained about the Super Rugby draw, do you agree that is disadvantages some teams?
The Western Force have come out complaining about the Super Rugby 2015 draw or fixtures list, claiming that it is too difficult for them with only two home games in their first seven games, including two six day turnarounds in their first three games. It is hard to know if this is simply an excuse for why they are sitting stonecold motherless last or if they actually have a point?
The Force do have a point, but it seems to be just as difficult for all teams. The problem is completing a draw that features fifteen teams from three different countries. There are some other problems like the fact that not all teams play each other and every team has two byes. In a nutshell, the Super Rugby competition has to be looked at holistically. Some teams had two byes before other teams even had one bye. Look at the New Zealand conference for example, the Hurricanes toured South Africa in the first few rounds, while the Highlanders haven't left New Zealand yet. Playing teams overseas brings different challenges for teams with overseas teams having different styles, while the New Zealand conference is tough, at least you play in familiar conditions.
The Force did well in Super Rugby 2014, but they got a relatively favourable draw, and even this year they have more opportunities to win matches with more home games than away games. The Super Rugby competition is only halfway through, just because a team like the Hurricanes is leading now, doesn't mean they will be leading at the end.
The Force can complain all they want, but it won't change things. It is hard to know if it is better to face the weaker teams at home and the more difficult teams away or vice versa. The Force don't have to travel as far to get to South Africa, but they do have to travel more to get to New Zealand. Their location could be more to blame than the draw.
