Was James Hook's Penalty Kick Successful? 5 views 12 Comments

I was sitting in the Wellington Regional Stadium very close to where James Hook's unsuccessful kick took place. This is my take on it.

Did James Hook's penalty kick go over or miss? I say it missed. Watch video footage below and tell me. It seems that everyone apart from the touch judges thought that it went over. I was actually at the South Africa vs Wales game sitting very close to where it happened at Wellington Regional Stadium and thought that it crossed the plane of the crossbar above the height of the upright post. The television replay looks like it was a successful kick, but I think the ball swung with the wind, but the arc of the swing was at the moment it crossed the plane of the crossbar which was when it went over the upright post. So the optical illusion of a successful kick was created. Of course a one point defeat for Wales at the hands of the Springboks now brings this kick into the spotlight. It would have completely changed this match. I actually think the touch judges got this kick correct.

Storms2010 13 Sep 2011 12:40 AM Besides Wales got 2 penalties that should have been the other way around because their guy was lying on top of the South African player on the ground which according to the law at ruck time deems that player as off his feet and Mr. Barnes lost the plot there so if all the correct calls were made then the score would have been 17 - 10!!!!!!!!!!!

Storms2010 13 Sep 2011 12:35 AM For those out there that don"t understand the ruling on the unsuccessful kick here how we referees are taught to judge it according to the law book/laws of the game: 'If a kick passes right above the upright post the kick is deemed as unsuccessful' thus the ball needs to pass on the inside of the upright and not right above it.....THIS KICK PASSED RIGHT ABOVE IT WHILE SWINGING IN like the original author of this post correctly wrote!!!!!

	7 . uglea 12 Sep 2011 01:22 PM Back in the day the touchies used to raise their flag if the ball was on the inside of their post and the ref would raise his arm if he judged it went over the cross bar. At the end of the day a ruling was made and the game continued. Cant really say much to those who prescirbe "if the posts has been . . . " or "should be awarded" it wasnt and thats how it finished. My relos in Wales were upset . .

Callouskiwi 12 Sep 2011 01:22 PM Whether it went through or not the decision will completely change the tournament, I really feel that was a huge turning point in the game when SA went down the other end of the field and scored 3 points (6 point swing) and got back a little momentum. Should Wales (shoulda coulda woulda situation) have won that game it would have had huge implications with SA most likely facing Australia in a QF.
	5 . CEY Guys 12 Sep 2011 12:51 PM Well the rule states that if a ball is kicked right over the upright post it will be ruled as a MISSED kick. Actually counted against him that he struck it so well and high.
	4 . deep 12 Sep 2011 11:34 AM It never went outside the line of the post, but for a little while it was inline with the post. It's possible the ball would have hit a taller upright and not gone over.

	2 . Bolander 12 Sep 2011 10:36 AM I was there. Sat right behind James hook when he kicked. Agree that the ball swung left after it passed the crossbar. If the uprights were higher it would have hit the post.
