Following the red card to Sam Warburton which helped France to win 9-8 it is hard to know if referees are playing too important role in determining results. Scotty Donaldson looks at semi final Number 1.
Wales captain Sam Warburton was sent off after 18 minutes, yet Wales still almost did enough to beat France before going down 9-8. Wales with 14 players were the only team to score a try, but will rue a couple of early penalty misses by James Hook and a late Stephen Jones botched drop kick which was made to look so difficult that it made me realise why a drop kick is worth three points. One can only imagine what a 15 man Wales team could have won by.
Should Sam Warburton have been sent off? It ruined this match. I have seen several similar tackles in this Rugby World Cup 2011 tournament and they received yellow cards only. I think this tackle could have gone either red or yellow, but I guess Warburton shouldn't have taken the risk and tested referee Alain Rolland's ability to see colours properly.
For the most part France kicked too much ball away, and had terrible handling, but thanks to Morgan Parra's goal kicking ended up winning 9-8. They also had great defence.
It is crazy how a team can lose two pool games and then defeat a poor England team who scored more off the field than on it in the quarter finals and beat a 14 man Wales team to end up in the final potentially against one of the teams that beat them so easily in the pool match. Was Pool A really the Group of Death rather than Wales' pool?
I don't think Alain Rolland had a bad game, apart from a strange call which gave Wales a late penalty which Leigh Halfpenny missed from halfway.
The game of rugby has too many rules which are open to interpretation especially at the breakdown and with so many things happening on the field, you wonder if they should have two on-field referees or greater input from the assistant referees or television match official.
Do you think referees dictate too many Rugby World Cup final matches? Just ask South Africans about Bryce Lawrence last week or New Zealanders about Wayne Barnes four years ago.
