Scotty Donaldson uses www.testrugby.com statistics to select an All Blacks Form XV based on Super Rugby's first 8 rounds. What do you think?
The All Blacks Form XV based on Super Rugby 2012 www.testrugby.com statistics from the first 8 rounds.
The team is based on average points per round in www.testrugby.com. Players must be in the Top 20 points for the round apart from for frontrow props when players must have played at least three matches.
Andrew Hore gets selected at hooker ahead of Danes Coles, Corey Flynn and the disappointing Keven Mealamu. Unfortunately Mealamu who was once a testrugby.com stud, has fallen victim to the Blues poor performances and injuries this season.
Props were difficult given that most of them haven't played enough to make the Top 20 points scorers. Charlie Faumauina has by far the best average for New Zealand props with 227 points. I had to search far and wide for another prop given how many have been injured or get subbed regularly. Tony Woodcock has done well in the three matches he has played this season.
The locks picked themselves with Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick among the best locks in the competition. While Whitelock's selection isn't a surprise, Retallick is a real bargain this season.
While Matt Todd makes the most tackles in Super Rugby, it is Adam Thomson who has been the best performing New Zealand loose forward this season with 338 points per game and one of New Zealand's best players overall. He averages 9 tackles (first tackler according to www.testrugby.com statistical definitions), 6 Go-Forwards and the thing that separates him from the other loose forwards in New Zealand is his 7 lineouts per game. Thomson makes the team at openside flanker. The other loose forwards to make the team are Chris Lowrey and Kieran Read. Liam Messam just missed the cut.
Halfback Tawera Kerr-Barlow sees off the competition of Andy Ellis, TJ Perenara and Aaron Smith for the halfback role. Halfbacks often get subbed and don't score heaps of points.
Beauden Barrett held off Aaron Cruden for the spot of first five eighth. Barrett is the highest scoring New Zealand player with 2445 points at an average of 349 per game. He has scored two tries and has five assists this season. He makes an average of 6 tackles and 3 Go-Forward runs per game. He is also still available for under $1 million. His goal-kicking has been impressive this season. Watch for Tom Taylor and Dan Carter to improve over the second half of the competition.
The midfield is supersize with Sonny Bill Williams and Robbie Fruean getting the nod. Sonny Bill Williams is the best midfielder in Super Rugby 2012 with over 2000 points after 8 rounds. He has plenty of points for tackles and Go-forwards. It was close for the second midfield spot with Fruean having an average of 223 points just getting the nod over Conrad Smith (222) and Tamati Ellison (217).
Julian Savea is the shock best outside back with 289 points per game. Andre Taylor gets the contentious fullback position with 272 points per game. Israel Dagg gets the other wing spot with an average of 251 points per game. They get there ahead of quality players like Hosea Gear, Ben Smith and Rudi Wulf.
Here is the team announced. Remember that players being subbed or getting injured during a match could easily affect their average and the players named in this All Blacks Form XV.
