Hire Experts For Concrete Cutting Making The Best
Concrete Driveways Adelaide is often recommended because of their low servicing. While road needs maintenance over several decades, concrete, once set up and enclosed, needs very little care. However, the concrete costs more than the road to set up, so you do pay a price for the time you will save.

Robbie Deans Dumped - Does He Deserve It? 13 views 5 Comments
08 July 2013 by The Swede Eaters

Robbie Deans has been dumped as Wallabies coach. Was he hard done by or did he deserve it?

Wallabies coach Robbie Deans will be replaced with Ewen McKenzie tipped to take over the reins before the Rugby Championship starts next month.  But the Wallabies have been in either second or third in the world with Robbie Deans in charge, but while plenty has been made about some inconsistent performances and a rift in the team, it is hard to know if the players or coach are at fault.

I think the Wallabies need an Australian coach, because throughout Deans' tenure as Wallabies coach there is always an underlying conspiracy theory based on if his allegiances lie to his job or home country of New Zealand.  That is why I think Jake White would be the wrong appointment, although I rate what Jake White has done with the Springboks and Brumbies.

It seems that all of those Crusaders fans who loved Robbie Deans and supported Australia rather than supporting the Graham Henry coached All Blacks have stopped bragging as Deans has gained mixed results as coach.

In my opinion, a coach can only work with the players he has got, and I think Deans has done well with the limited depth of players he has at his disposal.  That lack of depth was found out against the British Lions.  He has unearthed some talented young stars like James O'Connor, David Pocock and Will Genia.

I think the Quade Cooper situation was blown out of proportion.  While Cooper was great for the Reds, he has limitations in his game which would have been exploited by the big British and Irish Lions players.  I also think that any coach tends to lose his leadership abilities after a while.  It is probably about time the Wallabies have a change so McKenzie can prepare his team for the next Rugby World Cup.

It annoys me that when a team is winning the players get the credit, but when they lose, it is the coach that gets the chop.

I think Ewen McKenzie will have to stamp his mark on the Wallabies and potentially get rid of some of the disruptive players that caused problems for Deans.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Quade Cooper now that his old coach will be in charge.

Where to from here?

Robbie Deans could come back to New Zealand and coach the Highlanders or Crusaders, but I think Steve Hansen has the All Blacks job for the next two years at least.  I really want the Wallabies to be a strong team, because we play them all the time and it would be great to have a tight series with them in order to make the Rugby Championship into the strongest competition in the world.

In summary, Robbie Deans has done an alright job.  The Wallabies suffered some disappointing losses under him, but are the third best team in the world.  I think some of the players have to be accountable and the lack of quality front rowers, depth across the board and some internal factions made things challenging.

Did Robbie Deans to a good job with the Wallabies?  Are you pleased to see him leave?

Deans should have been cut 2 years ago after the RWC 11. Reds had won the SXV that year so McKenzie was ready. Ask John O'Neil

Deans is mud. 58% record with the wallabies. Losses to Samoa and Scotland. 3 wins out of +/- 18 games against the All Blacks. The loss to the Lions was the final nail in the coffin.

If SGH or any other ABs coach had lost games against Samoa or Scotland he would have been fired with immediate effect.

He wont be home anytime soon. Those NH clubs wil come a knocking. Former all black, most successful coach at Super12 level, former International coach of a top 3 rugby playing nation wil be good enough for them to pick him up.

Later dingo deans...The wolf in sheeps clothing

Deans was a brilliant coach when nestled within a familiar environment and where he had lengthy, consistent time with his squad to nurture his plans. At the Crusaders he was able to select people who either matched his mould or who would change to match it.

At provincial level that can work. At International level it becomes an obvious flaw.

The same problems were evident when he had influence over the All Blacks as assistent coach. Cullen put everywhere except fullback, Leon MacDonald (an OK fullback) left floundering at centre as the AB's get knocked out of the World Cup, while Tana Umaga sat on the bench.

I think John Hart, another brilliant coach in his local environment, suffered a few similar issues but to a lesser extent.

Graeme Henry and team excelled on these fronts. The 15 best players were always on the park and were always a united, motivated group with no visible disruption of any form. A RWC trophy is on the shelf as a result.

There is no doubt that Deans gave it his all, but I agree that in this situation it wasn't enough. A handful too many losses at the highest level, and more importantly far too many losses against lesser teams.

Now I'm really looking forward to the 'McKenzie's era'. There is more than a whiff of excitement about what he brings to the table.

I'm not surprised nor disappointed that Deans has been cut. When he was appointed, I was enthused as an All Blacks and Crusaders supporter. I thought he would launch a new era for the Wallabies, whose excellence was eroding as the legendary veterans retired. Kiwi coaches have had spectacular success all around the world, and I anticipated the same would be true of Deans with the Wallabies. Instead what I observed was that Deans would identify promising players, but if they didn't measure up right away to some mythical standard he had, he'd drop them. I don't buy the argument that there is a dearth of talented players in Australia -- please. Deans couldn't settle on what he really wanted, the exception being at scrumhalf (his position as a player). At least he recognized that Genia had it all! As to a full back line, Deans didn't seem to have a clue. (I guess once the scrumhalf got the ball out, the rest was just magical footwork, as far as Deans was concerned.) 'No idea of what makes a great flyhalf. He had one in Giteau, but put him out to pasture. Berrick Barnes had promise, but Deans always undervalued him and eroded his confidence. Cooper is really mediocre (too mercurial, emotional, up and down, gets flustered too easily). Think of the great ones in the modern game: Larkham, Mertons, Wilkinson, Carter, Sexton -- all cool, calm, unflappable as well as skilled. Now I love James O'Connor, but he's not a flyhalf. Like Ashley-Cooper (who is terribly constrained at center), O'Connor needs space to operate. In my view, they're both outside backs/fullbacks. (The Wallaby fullback of the future, however, is Jessie Mogg. ) Anyway, enough of my rant. I'm glad that some fresh (and hopefully clear) eyes will be carving out a new back line. There's plenty of talent; it just needs to be used properly and given an opportunity to gel and develop as a unit.

Coaching any major team is something of a poisoned chalice. As you rightly say, the players enjoy all the credit and usually the financial rewards when things go well, but it's always the coach to go first when things go wrong. I must admit, I was surprised that Australia appointed a foreign coach in the first place and even if Deans had enjoyed better results, it was surely never going to be a long term appointment.
Robbie Deans is a great coach with a great rugby mind as he proved over and over again . As a Springbok supporter I also agree that we want to play against a good Wallaby and a good All Blacks team. We always want to pit ourselves against the best and victory is never sweeter than when your rivals are at their best.
That begs the question. Was this the best Australian rugby team of the last 20 odd years? I think not. Some brilliant individuals with incredible skills but this Aussie team is a long way from your World Cup winning squads of old. There certainly appears to be a discipline problem with the players and whoever takes over will have their work cut out to get the team dynamics working again. Imagine a Wallaby team with arguably the best back line players in the world, competing upfront and scoring from all corners of the field. The Giteau's and Cooper's and Beale's when let harnessed correctly are well worth the entrance fee and can beat any team on their day. Throw in a little bit of Genia and Folua and Ioane and O' Connor and some discipline and hard work in the forwards and who knows what the next World Cup may bring?
