Robbie Deans has been dumped as Wallabies coach. Was he hard done by or did he deserve it?
Wallabies coach Robbie Deans will be replaced with Ewen McKenzie tipped to take over the reins before the Rugby Championship starts next month. But the Wallabies have been in either second or third in the world with Robbie Deans in charge, but while plenty has been made about some inconsistent performances and a rift in the team, it is hard to know if the players or coach are at fault.
I think the Wallabies need an Australian coach, because throughout Deans' tenure as Wallabies coach there is always an underlying conspiracy theory based on if his allegiances lie to his job or home country of New Zealand. That is why I think Jake White would be the wrong appointment, although I rate what Jake White has done with the Springboks and Brumbies.
It seems that all of those Crusaders fans who loved Robbie Deans and supported Australia rather than supporting the Graham Henry coached All Blacks have stopped bragging as Deans has gained mixed results as coach.
In my opinion, a coach can only work with the players he has got, and I think Deans has done well with the limited depth of players he has at his disposal. That lack of depth was found out against the British Lions. He has unearthed some talented young stars like James O'Connor, David Pocock and Will Genia.
I think the Quade Cooper situation was blown out of proportion. While Cooper was great for the Reds, he has limitations in his game which would have been exploited by the big British and Irish Lions players. I also think that any coach tends to lose his leadership abilities after a while. It is probably about time the Wallabies have a change so McKenzie can prepare his team for the next Rugby World Cup.
It annoys me that when a team is winning the players get the credit, but when they lose, it is the coach that gets the chop.
I think Ewen McKenzie will have to stamp his mark on the Wallabies and potentially get rid of some of the disruptive players that caused problems for Deans.
It will be interesting to see what happens with Quade Cooper now that his old coach will be in charge.
Where to from here?
Robbie Deans could come back to New Zealand and coach the Highlanders or Crusaders, but I think Steve Hansen has the All Blacks job for the next two years at least. I really want the Wallabies to be a strong team, because we play them all the time and it would be great to have a tight series with them in order to make the Rugby Championship into the strongest competition in the world.
In summary, Robbie Deans has done an alright job. The Wallabies suffered some disappointing losses under him, but are the third best team in the world. I think some of the players have to be accountable and the lack of quality front rowers, depth across the board and some internal factions made things challenging.
Did Robbie Deans to a good job with the Wallabies? Are you pleased to see him leave?
