Here are 10 tips when playing Super Rugby 2013 fantasy rugby pick the player games. Who are you picking for Super Rugby 2013?
Super Rugby 2013 starts next weekend. There are a different fantasy rugby pick the player type games which are open to New Zealanders including www.testrugby.com. Here are 10 simple rules which will give you a realistic chance at becoming competitive in whichever fantasy rugby competition you are in. There is also a bit of luck that comes into it with injuries or try scoring players.
Super Rugby Fantasy Rugby 10 Tips
1) Back to basics. The key to winning fantasy rugby competitions is doing the basics correct. This means having a valid team at the lock of the round and making sure that your players are starting is very important. Sometimes teams are named well in advance, but you give yourself more of a chance if your players are starting.
I keep updated Super 15 Rugby 2013 team lists here http://www.superrugbytips.com/p/super-rugby-2013.html
2) Try scorers. No matter which competition you are in, you get heaps of points for having try scorers in your team. For example, in www.testrugby.com you not only get 100 points for each try, but your team gets bonus points for scoring several tries. This makes selecting try scorers important, especially if they are tight forwards. You don't have to spend heaps to get consistent try scorers. The key is to pick players likely to score tries against teams with poor defence. This often means stacking your team with players from a team likely to win convincingly. Some teams like the Cheetahs and Hurricanes had great offensive records last season and so their players were likely to score tries.
Here are the Super 15 Rugby 2012 Round Robin top try scorers.
Highest Try Scorers
Rank Player Name Pos Team Games Total Avg Price
1 Bjorn Basson OB BUL 16 10 1 $972,500
2 Andre Taylor OB HUR 16 10 1 $935,000
3 Julian Savea OB HUR 13 9 1 $800,000
4 Lwazi Mvovo OB SHK 16 8 0 $915,000
5 Sona Taumalolo FR CHF 16 8 0 $890,000
6 Henry Speight OB BRM 16 8 0 $717,500
7 Dominic Shipperley OB RED 16 8 0 $550,000
3) Players likely to play 80 minutes - Select players likely to be on the paddock most of the time. This usually means selecting players who are crucial to their teams. Players like Adam Thomson and Adriaan Strauss have been great performers as their teams often don't have the depth in their squads to allow these players to be subbed or rested. It often helps if they are the captains.
4) Watch the draw - Keep an eye on the Super Rugby 2013 draw. All fantasy rugby games have a limit on both the salary cap and trades for changing players. Because the Lions are touring Australia later this year, week one will mean purchasing plenty of Australian team players because they are the only teams playing. It can be a logistical nightmare at times and often requires planning ahead. There is nothing worse than running out of trades!
5) Buy low, sell high - to avoid losing value of players, it is best if you buy players while they are cheap and sell them when they are worth the most. This will increase your salary cap. This means selling players before they have the bye or get injured and buying when they return to the field.
6) Spending your money in the right positions - It is important because of the salary cap to build your squad, but you must know which positions to spend money on to get the best value. I usually save money buying at least one cheap lock because they don't usually score many points. There are usually cheap outside backs where if you can purchase one from a good team, then they are a great purchase. I spend up large on inside backs, centres, loose forwards and at least one front row player. These are usually where you want consistent points scorers, so you can't afford to cut costs.
Unless you get freakish try scoring props, you are better to select hookers with their lineout points as your frontrowers.
For locks you want genuine ball winning lineout and restart locks.
Loose forwards seem to suit players used in the lineouts who are also great ball carriers.
Inside backs are usually best if they are goalkicking first five eighths who have running games.
Blockbusting midfield backs are useful because they beat the defence and take the ball to the line whilst making tackles.
I usually prefer try scoring fullbacks as my outside backs. Some heavy try scorers can score massive amounts of points if they bag several in one match.
7) Goalkickers - Goalkickers are a great way of boosting your points. Often there are some bargain priced goalkickers who can be of great value. There are some goalkickers who aren't inside backs and these players like James O'Connor are a consistent form of points.
8) Statistically favourable players - Statistically favourable players are the ideal players who score well in the 13 statistical categories that www.testrugby.com use.
Someone like Richie McCaw doesn't usually do very well because he gives away penalties and isn't a great ball carrier and lineout forward. On the other hand, Adam Thomson usually does really well because he is a regular try scorer, top tackler and lineout forward. He also beats plenty of defenders when carrying the ball.

9) Unknown or wrongly listed players - To fit under the salary cap managers need to buy some "sleepers". The best type of player is a loose forward listed as a lock or an inside back goalkicker listed as an outside back or midfield back. There are also some very cheap players listed who are new to Super Rugby but have very promising futures. Last year, players like Johan Goosen and Siya Kolisi were extremely good value for money when they were playing.
10) Pick players from winning teams - It is best to have players from winning from winning teams, especially late in the season. In Super Rugby 2013, teams like the Stormers, Sharks, Chiefs and Crusaders should go well. It is also worth picking some Australian players from the Brumbies, Waratahs or Reds, because they have the weakest conference. You want players from these teams because they are likely to play deep into the finals. The only problem is that these squads may have more depth and a rest and rotation policy. Players from the lesser teams are good for tackling statistics and getting time on the paddock because they have less depth. You don't want to rely on your players from weaker teams for their try scoring ability!
Here is the Super Rugby 2012 Team of the Competition.
Super Rugby 2012 is over for most teams and since all 15 teams have played 16 matches each it gives us a chance to make to name a team based on Super 15 Rugby 2012 form. I have based these selections solely on www.testrugby.com statistics which favour things like try scoring, assists, tackles, turnovers lost and won, lineouts, scrums, go forward and linebreaks among other things. Do you agree with the statistics?
Selection was based on www.testrugby.com average points per game and the player must have played at least eight matches. It is interesting to see who makes this team. There are plenty of players who would be considered superior in their position, but they didn't make this team. It seems that try-scoring players have an advantage along with players who start for teams with less depth. Players like Adam Thomson and Adriaan Strauss thrived because they played plenty of minutes and remained relatively injury free. Some quality players in teams with more depth were rested and rotated.
The player with the highest average points is Adriaan Strauss from the Cheetahs with 5085 points at 339 points per game. He only just made the team ahead of Stephen Moore and Bismarck Du Plessis.
There are five New Zealand based players, five Australian and five South Africans.
Amazingly the Rebels and Cheetahs provided three players each to this team despite their lowly rankings.
Unfortunately, the likes of Sona Taumalolo, Adam Thomson and Sonny Bill Williams won't be returning for Super 15 Rugby 2013.
