Following the State of Origin debacle featuring a streaker, is there still room for it in sport?
The State of Origin 3 streaker who had a major impact on the game by getting a Queensland try disallowed and giving them back the ball with a whole new set of six tackles with very little time left in such an important match has got me wondering if there is still a place for streakers in sport?
I thought people would have outgrown such pursuits, but it seems that until administrators put harsher penalties on these people, it seems there will still be streakers. If it is a monetary fine then people often chip in to pay the fine and a life ban of a stadium means nothing unless there is facial recognition at the gate. People can always dress up to get back into the stadium.
Ironically the media (me included) have given the streaker what he wants with increased publicity for the 33 year old New Zealander from Nelson. How typical for the reputation of New Zealand! In these days of increased television coverage, social media and the internet there almost seems to be more incentive to streak because you get more fame.
I think while sending offenders to prison is a bit harsh, streakers should have to do 100 hours community work or pick up rubbish at the stadium. But then they wouldn't be able to be banned from the stadium.
It is also scary how an intoxicated man with a few extra pounds could run 140 metres past the security guards and get into the game so easily. I think the security guards may have to up their game too.
They need to show the level of commitment shown by the security guard at the Australia vs USA game at the Rugby World Cup 2011, he tackled the Captain America streaker who had no pants on and had his face permanently on the steakers butt as he wriggled to try to escape!
With so much at stake in these days of professional sport do you still think there is a place for streakers or is it just some harmless entertainment and fun for everyone?
