Super Rugby is expanding to 24 teams in 2016. Do you agree with this massive call by SANZAR? Reporter April Fool reports.
Super Rugby is set to be expanded to become Super 24 Rugby in 2016 according to reports. The SANZAR nations have been in recent talks about expanding the current Super 15 Rugby to include teams from other nations, but the latest revelation has surprised and stunned most parties who thought that the competition in its current format was long enough as it is.
Currently the Super Rugby season goes from February to August, but the latest revelations would definitely put pressure on all parties to introduce a draw suitable to accommodate all teams, with a conference system the best likely option.
The Super 24 Rugby competition would capture a truly global market with teams from North America, Asia, South America and Europe joining the existing SANZAR teams.
The Super 24 Rugby competition will include
Six South African teams, six New Zealand teams, four Australian teams, two Argentinian teams, and one team each from the Pacific Islands, Japan, Canada, USA and the two finalists from the Heineken Cup would also be included in an attempt to see if the Northern or Southern Hemisphere is stronger.
The most likely format would include three eight team or four six team conferences with the winners coming together to meet each other in the finals. Details of Super Rugby 2014 will be revealed at midday by SANZAR officials.
This has shocked me given I thought there were already enough teams in Super Rugby, but it must be difficult when so many countries want to be included into Super Rugby and there are so many massive markets to be conquered. I can't wait for this press conference on 1st April at noon.
