There was an incident in the Cheetahs demolition of the Highlanders in Invercargill in Super Rugby Round 4. Check out what happened below! Do you think the try should have been awarded?
I contacted the South African Rugby Referees website asking about the definition of a charge down following Super Rugby Round action where my Highlanders were smashed by the Cheetahs.
The Cheetah's midfield back Robert Ebersohn scored a try after charging down a Lima Sopoaga chip kick which many people thought was a knock-on. I saw a match between Otago and Southland at Carisbrook in 1998 where something similar happened and it was actually called a knock-on.
Lima Sopoaga of the Highlanders chipped. Robert Ebersohn knocked the ball down in the air. The ball bounced forward and Ebersohn gathered it and ran 40 metres to score a try.
The referee was happy with the try-scoring part but referred the knock down to the TMO, asking whether it was a charge-down or a knock-on.
The TMO advised that it was a charge-down and not a knock-on, and so the try was awarded - seven more points to the Cheetahs who won the match 36-19 in Invercargill.
