As a kiwi, I am looking forward to hosting the Rugby World Cup. Here are six reasons why I can't wait for next friday.
The Rugby World Cup 2011 gets underway on Friday 9th September and here are six reasons why I am looking forward to this tournament.
1) It brings rugby to the forefront of life in New Zealand. In recent years people have been more keen on talking about feelings than rugby, but for the next seven weeks rugby will be the main topic of conversation on everyones' lips.
2) The All Blacks will have an amazing opportunity to win the Rugby World Cup for the first time since 1987. It will be great if they can win on home soil and get the monkey off their backs. Being a part of this would be absolutely brilliant. It will be satisfying if they win by defeating their main rivals including the Wallabies, Springboks and France. That is a big "if"!
3) About 100,000 fans will be travelling to New Zealand, bringing colour and atmosphere to New Zealand. These people will breathe life into the tournament and create a crowd atmosphere second to none. Touring fans have a habit of being more outspoken and charismatic than the conservative New Zealand fans, so it will be interesting to see them here. The fans will be great to meet and provide New Zealanders a chance to make friends for life.
4) Millions of dollars will be spent by tourists over the duration of the tournament buying food, drink, souvenirs, accommodation and transport. This has to be great for the economy. There will also be plenty of media coverage of the tournament going to billions of viewers throughout the world. This tournament is a massive opportunity for the New Zealand tourism industry.
5) There will be rugby matches on all the time making for plenty of nights infront of the television and at the stadium for rugby fans. I loved this about the ITM Cup
when there were matches on most nights of the week.
6) The opportunity to see the best players, teams, coaches and referees in action in the one country as part of the same tournament is awesome. There will be so many different styles on display creating a diverse smorgasbord of rugby for viewing by fans.
