Hire Experts For Concrete Cutting Making The Best
Concrete Driveways Adelaide is often recommended because of their low servicing. While road needs maintenance over several decades, concrete, once set up and enclosed, needs very little care. However, the concrete costs more than the road to set up, so you do pay a price for the time you will save.

What Is Wrong With The Blues? 14 views 10 Comments
12 April 2012 by The Swede Eaters

Scotty Donaldson looks at New Zealand Rugby's problem-child the Blues. They have the population and players but are sitting at the bottom of the New Zealand conference.

The Blues sit at the bottom of the New Zealand Super Rugby conference despite having hte strongest looking squad on paper at the start of the season (32% of this website rated the Blues as the strongest New Zealand Super Rugby 2012 squad). While the season is only halfway through, it is difficult seeing the Blues turnaround their troubled season and win some matches. Here are some potential reasons for the Blues dismal start to the Super Rugby season.

1) Injuries - the Blues have struggled with injuries to key individuals this season. Experienced All Blacks like Jerome Kaino, Anthony Boric and Isaia Toeava have been huge losses and the Blues can't afford to lose three such experienced players. There have also been several other injuries, leaving them a bit short on players.

2) Lack of discipline - Piri Weepu returned to training over-weight, while Rene Ranger's late no arms tackle against the Bulls after a try had been scored showed a lack of discipline in the Blues. Peter and Francis Saili stood down for breaking team protocol. You would think professional rugby players would know better.

3) Blues catchment - The Blues catchment area is the most populous in New Zealand. They can draw on players from Auckland, North Harbour and Northland, but they seem to be instead mainly drawing on players from the Auckland academy like Ben Lam who happens to be related to the coach. Surely North Harbour and Northland have a sprinkling of players who are better players than Ben Lam who didn't cover himself in glory earlier in the season when he played. North Harbour and Northland players like Bronson Murray, Mike Harris and Tom Chamberlain have moved to other teams and/ or countries to get Super Rugby contracts. Northland and North Harbour probably aren't as flush with too many rising stars, but surely Nafi Tuitavake and Bryce Heme would have filled in admirably on the wing for the Blues in South Africa. I also think that Rugby League has stolen some of Auckland's best young rugby players thanks to the NZ Warriors and other Australian NRL clubs.

4) Rugby World Cup Hangover - There are several players in the Blues who experienced the win of a lifetime at the Rugby World Cup 2011. Unfortunately some of them like Ali Williams and Piri Weepu are struggling to get back into any kind of form now and you wonder when these guys will go overseas for the money. We already know Jerome Kaino and Isaia Toeava are going to Japan, but you wonder when Tony Woodcock, Keven Mealamu, Daniel Braid, Ali Williams, Ma'a Nonu and Piri Weepu will also be heading overseas.

5) Cohesion - The Blues simply don't seem to be gelling as a team. They have plenty of great individual players, but they seem to struggle to perform as a cohesive unit. Plenty of this comes down to playing time together and the types of player on the books at the Blues.

6) Coach - Pat Lam is a great guy but he has made some interesting selections this season. He seems reluctant to start the exciting Gareth Anscombe and seemed like he would rather pick either Michael Hobbs or Piri Weepu out of position ahead of him at Number 10. He also picked relative Ben Lam on the wing. It is hard to know why Pat Lam can't get the best out of his players? I remember in the past there were player power issues with the Blues and outsiders who would come in to coach them. Guys like Jed Rowlands and David Nucifora are two who felt the wrath of the experienced Blues players. Pat Lam is a local and Pacific Islander and so it seems that he does have the respect of the players at least. The only problem is that he doesn't seem to be getting the best out of them. It leaves you wondering if they were to get a new coach how they would fit in? Things could be easier if the senior core of players like Ali Williams, Keven Mealamu, Tony Woodcock and company were to leave and the new coach could do what Mark Hammett did with the Hurricanes and start with a clean slate. Lam has had enough chances and probably needs to go at the end of this season.

7) Racism - The Blues do have heaps of Pacific Island and Maori players which is hardly surprising given that Auckland has such a diverse population, but surely having a Samoan coach is a good thing as he should be able to get the best out of fellow Pacific Islanders who may train differently to the white guys.

I think the racist card comes into it where people think the Blues need to build combinations of types of players, and this may require some more grafters like Conrad Smith who make few mistakes and play the percentages. This type of player is often a white in colour, although someone like Benson Stanley is a good foil for the flair type players like Rene Ranger. I am not afraid to admit that for years I have called for my Highlanders to get some more flair and I am not afraid to admit that this often comes about by recruiting Pacific Islanders and Maori players. The Highlanders continue to rely on Maori or Pacific Island players in the draft to complement their strapping white southern lads upfront.

I think this is why the All Blacks are so successful, they have the combination of solid grafters and flash harries. Many of the flash harries are of Pacific Island or Maori ethnicity.

8) Finally the Super Rugby competition is so difficult with so many top level players in every team and it only takes for one team to be slightly off their game for a team to lose. Remember that the Blues only lost to the Crusaders in the opening match by a whisker and sometimes there is a bit of luck, a referee's call and some injuries in the way of being a successful team. It is about building confidence and trying to make winning a routine.

Why do you think the Blues have been rubbish this season and how should they fix it?

DEPTH! Apologies if I've missed something but no one mentioned the MAIN reason the Blues suck - DEPTH. It's been the case for bloody ages, as soon as they lose a few players the crumble!! For such a massive region Auckland Rugby has been pathetic in creating a base of players to choose from! The problem goes far deeper than the 15 fullahs on the field and Pat Lam!

Add Depth to attitude, cohesion, and Piri and there's your answer.

The Hurricanes this year is a classic example of later 2. Get rid of the poison players, play like a team and your away laughing. On paper the Canes are half the team they were last year but look how much better they are now!!

By the way, Im completely with #2 - It's pathetic to generalise by race and I can tell you what, if any sports club was to base day to day policies and decisions on race they would not succeed!! A good coach and organisation manages people/players on an individual basis! It is the individual that responds differently to training, plays with different skills and weaknesses, not the bloody whole race of people. Sorry Swede but the only thing that is naive is thinking generalist attitudes and decisions based on race is ok!

I have had time to think about this further and think that they need a fresh start next season. Hopefully Dad's Army like Braid, Williams, Woodcock, Mealamu, Nonu, Weepu etc all go overseas and they can mould some good new young players like Anscombe under a new coach or have some kind of assistance for Lam.

wimpy comments as per usual

Which players are up the coaches arse - Ben Lam, Brad Mika - please someone world-check his passport as im sure the date of birth has been fudged

Pats a nice guy - maybe better to be assistant coach

Maa Nonu - why didnt you just stay in Japan as it seems you cant be arsed coming back to your new franchise

Weepu - fat and unfit and fat

then you have a weak CEO with chip on shoulder since 1987 RWC

Its time for a new coach and retire the old brigade like Mealamu and Williams. Get rid of the old culture if there is one and start again. The Blues are not playing as a team and even though we've got a few injuries the replacements should be stepping up to the mark. Racisim has nothing to do with it, they need to play a team game instead of a individual show off style. No excuses please this is the professional era and the Blues should be consistently one of the best NZ teams in the comp. They should be ashamed of themselves, the way Mealamu talks up their losses you'd think its ok to lose.

When the Blues dressed the Bulls, there was quite a hype among analysts/writers that NZ teams are setting the pace and brilliance and, and ... Now some analyst/writers :-) are worried about the Blues. Sometimes one should see the obvious. Like when Morne missed 5 penalties/conversions - you don't come to the conclusion that the Blues played well.
Similar - look around at the other conferences. In SA the Lions took the Currie Cup - in essence the same players against the same SA teams in the SA conference. They are getting nowhere, to date. The Reds holds the 2011 Super15 Cup and took the Australian team far in the WC 2011. Neither Blues, Reds and Lions are performing now. Each of these teams have an extensive injury list.
Teams that have done well in S15 in the past, were well managed in terms of fitness, nursing injuries and making use of all players that are available to the coach.
Looking at ethnic/race differences is not the answer. Diversity builds the team, when more skills are made available. The SA, Aus and other NZ teams are all diverse, without an issue. The log toppers has an "ethnic" coach and they seem to be getting places - for the moment. Non-white wingers and all.
As for the old hands and discipline argument - there may be a case. Some of these players in case were top-scores here at Testrugby last year, but do not feature this year. It means they just don't have the same intensity as in the past. Something I have noted in the past, in other teams with a lot of experience players.

I think it would be naive to think that the backgrounds of different people wouldn't affect the way that players train or play and hasn't affected the Blues. There are so many cultures in that Blues team more so than most other teams in the competition. I think it would be naive to think that they would all respond the same way.

Pacific Islanders and Maoris have a different genetic makeup which sees them probably over represented in Super Rugby if anything, that is what makes them so exciting and talented players. How many wingers in New Zealand Super Rugby teams have been white boys in the past 10 years? A very small percentage given that European New Zealanders make up 77% of New Zealanders at the moment. How many All Black first fives have been of Pacific Island origin, I am struggling to think of one.

Stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason, things like body type and upbringing/culture surely have an affect on everything.

That is why rugby is a great game, because there is room for different ethnicities to have a role. I think it is great to have mixture of these ethnicities and style of players in one team.

To link someone's rugby playing/training style to their ethnicity, as you have done in number 7, is racist. If rugby ability was genetic (as race is) you would expect to see more sons of International representatives being representatives also. Stereotyping someone due to the colour of their skin is racism, Saying white players are less error prone and harder workers, is racism. Saying Pacific Islanders are flashier and would respond better to a coach who is a pacific islander, is racism. It may not seem like it to you, but it is.

It's time to get rid of those players who r about to look for oversea's contracts...GET RID OF THEM NOW...bring in some fresh young talent. So what if they get beat the season for them is over already.they will gain some experience for next season and more importantly over the next 4 yrs who knows could be good candidates for the next world cup
