The Chiefs beat the Brumbies in a close Super Rugby final. Did the best team win? Which Chiefs will make the All Blacks Rugby Championship Squad?
The Chiefs won back to back Super Rugby titles with a 27-22 win over a gutsy Brumbies. The Brumbies started strongly and were a nuisance at the breakdown with George Smith showing he still has it. The Chiefs poor goal kicking threatened to derail their bid for another Super Rugby title, but tries to Liam Messam and Robbie Robinson eventually got them ahead in the second half after trailing for most of the match. Christian Lealifano was classy for the Brumbies scoring all of the Brumbies 22 points.
The Chiefs got better value off their bench against a Brumbies team who were brave in defeat, but the travel from Canberra to Pretoria to Hamilton in the last three weeks probably took its toll. I must say full credit must go to both sets of coaches because on paper these teams include players unwanted by other teams and they have molded both of these teams into quality rugby teams. Would the Brumbies have been any better off with David Pocock instead of George Smith?
The Chiefs did start slowly, but Liam Messam stood up and was counted in the second half with a man of the match performance, including a try.
The Chiefs do what the Blues did in 1996 and 1997 by winning back to back titles over the Sharks and Brumbies.
It will be interesting to see how many Chiefs players make the All Blacks Rugby Championship squad which is named tomorrow. Aaron Cruden's goal kicking has left me thinking that I still prefer Dan Carter as the first choice All Blacks starting team. I think the Chiefs players Cruden, Tawera Kerr-Barlow, Liam Messam, Sam Cane and Brodie Retallick should make the All Blacks Rugby Champtionship squad, while both Ben Afeaki, Ben Tamiefuna and flanker Tanierau Latimer also have a shot. It is amazing to think this team won the Super Rugby 2013 without Sonny Bill Williams and Richard Kahui. They will probably only contribute six players to the All Blacks Rugby Championship squad which is testament to the coaching staff.
New Zealand teams have now won 13 out of 18 Super Rugby titles since 1996.
Who was your man of the match? Which Chiefs players will make the All Blacks Rugby Championship squad?
