Correct margin predictions: 9 from 14 - 64%
Last week The Formula picked up 5 from 6 correct margin predictions. The one mistake came about in the Blues game, where I once again underestimated all that savage power and pace the Blues have right across the board. I don't know what's got into Rene Ranger but if he can show any sort of consistency he's gotta be a sure bet for the next All Blacks squad. From the props carrying it up, to the speed they play the game at, to the work done at the breakdown, they're just plain impressive and they're showing just how effective an elite coaching staff can be. Time for the game predictions.
Hurricaves vs Crusaders
The poor old Crusaders were thrown to the wolves last week for their opening game, but they'll be much the better for it now. The Formula has them taking this one out by just 2 points, largely due to their power in the set piece and their kicking game, but it won't be a romp by any means. I fear the Sader's have too many ordinary players such as Crotty, the Whitelocks (excluding Sam), and Guilford's replacement on the wing to make it past the semi's this year, but let's not look too far ahead. It's the CRUSADERS BY 12 AND UNDER.
Rebels vs Reds
Yehp, the Rebels worst fears have been realised - they've lost one of their 3 big guns in Beale, and they couldn't afford to lose a single one of them. The Reds have got Faainga back in the midfield and Lance at fullback giving their team a much better look, and hopefully some much needed bite on attack. The Formula has the Reds snatching this one away from home, and I'm obliged to agree seeing that I am, essentially, the Formula. Pseudonym innit. Creepy. REDS BY 12 AND UNDER.
Chiefs vs Stormers
The Chiefs have got a better team than the Stormers, but that will only serve to ease their margin of defeat here. They've travelled all the way to Africa and are coming up against last years premier defensive team in the Stormers. On top of that, the Stormers will be as desperate to win as Pope Benedict is to get away from all the sex scandals. Travel is the big factor here, and the Formula has the STORMERS BY 12 AND UNDER.
Sharks vs Kings
After only watching one game from the Kings, I'm still not convinced I know enough about their players to accurately gauge a match prediction. But they've won a Curry Cup or three, they seem desperate to prove they belong at this level, and they'll be fresh and raring to go coming off a maiden win following their bye. Their 11 and the big blonde loosie should be able to impact the game, and they're at home. But they won't win it. SHARKS BY 12 AND UNDER.
Cheetahs vs Highlanders
Has travel factor ever been more apparent than in the Cheetahs vs Chiefs game last weekend? The Cheetahs ran out of steam after 50 mins and got utterly smashed as a result. That shouldn't be the case this weekend as they've had another week to acclimate themselves, but the Formula still has the Highlanders as heavy favorites. HIGHLANDERS BY 13 AND OVER.
Waratahs vs Brumbies
Brumbies look the goooooods. Oh yeah, and Smith's back. You've got a better chance of seeing Hashim Amla dye his beard orange than seeing the Waratahs take this one, but it's an Aussie derby game, and that means dour and tight. BRUMBIES BY 12 AND UNDER.
Blues vs Bulls
Whoa baby, those Blues. Every predictors nightmare. Well I'm going to finally back them this time against a weakened Bulls team who are looking to bring some power off the bench to minimize travel factor. But if it's rainy on Saturday that margin of victory will be changing quick as quick. BLUES BY 13 AND OVER.
*****BLUES TEAM HAS BEEN NAMED AND BLUES ARE GIVING MAJORITY OF THEIR B TEAM A RUN. FORMULA REVISED - BLUES BY 12 AND UNDER*****
