Bath head coach Gary Gold was left fuming after his side slumped to a 14-13 defeat at lowly Sale Sharks and he now feels that his side have a lot to prove if they are to get anything out of the rest of this season.
Ahead of the game Sale sat second bottom of the table, courtesy of a points deduction to London Welsh, having only won four games in the league all season and Gold had targeted the trip to the North West as a must win game for his side.
Following the defeat, however, he was left to contemplate the likelihood of Bath missing out on the end of season play offs; "We came in here today setting ourselves goals and objectives to hopefully be in the top four. That's probably gone now but never say never,” Gold said. “We'll probably be written off by everybody now so we've got a lot to prove.”
Following the game, Bath sat in seventh position six points off Northampton in fourth, having played a game more. With a tough run of fixtures, including Harlequins and Saracens away, to come, Gold knows that his team will need to improve dramatically to have any chance of making the play-offs.
"It was incredibly frustrating,” Gold said to betting news pundits. “I think there were a couple of basic things that we could have done better and our lineout could have functioned better."
Despite Gold’s gloomy outlook Bath are still in with a chance of winning some silverware this year as they remain in the hunt to win the European Challenge Cup.
Bath will meet Stade Francais in the Quarter Finals in two weeks time and, whilst the chances of them making the premiership top four may look slim, they certainly have the ability within their squad to make a real push for European glory. If Gold’s men can pick themselves up quickly from the defeat to Sale then all may not be lost just yet.
