British & Irish Lions captain Sam Warburton says his side will be looking to “finish off” Australia when the pair meet in the second Test on Saturday.
Warburton’s side battled to a 23-21 victory in the first meeting in Brisbane last weekend and travel to Victoria knowing that another success will see them create history by becoming the first Lions team to win a series since the famous Tour to South Africa in 1997.
However, this will be easier said than done as the Wallabies will be full of confidence after being written off by rugby betting pundits before the first Test, a game they only lost due to the inaccuracy of both James O’Connor and Kurtley Beale from the kicking tee.
The performance has persuaded Lions coach Warren Gatland to make five changes to his starting line-up, with the most notable alteration being at blindside with the inclusion of hard tackling Welshman Dan Lydiate ahead of Tom Croft, suggestion the Kiwi coach wants to shackle elusive Australian scrum-half Will Genia.
Defeat at the Etihad Stadium could mean disaster for Warburton and co, as the momentum would be fully behind their opponents going into the final Test in Sydney.
The openside now says everyone in the camp is focussed on winning on Saturday and is desperate to kill off the Wallabies in Melbourne.
"The talk around the players has been making sure we finish it this weekend," Warburton said. "There has been no complacency thinking that we've got a week off because there is another opportunity next week.
"Momentum would completely swing if Australia won. They'd be going into another home game to finish after winning a game. So we definitely want to finish it off this weekend and the players are motivated to do that."
