NSW Waratahs coach Michael Cheika has vowed that his side will provide a stern test for the British and Irish Lions when the two sides meet in Sydney on Saturday.
After three convincing wins from four matches, including a 64-0 win over a Combined Country XV on Tuesday, the Lions will certainly be looking for a proper workout when they meet the Waratahs on Saturday.
Luckily for them, that is exactly what Cheika intends to give them and he has promised the Lions that his players will front up. “Physicality can occur in lots of ways, at rucks, scrums and the contacts have got to be big from our lads on Saturday,” said the former Leinster coach.
Having seen the Lions sweep aside all of the opposition put in front of them on the tour so far, Cheika knows that his side must give everything if they are to be in with a chance of avenging the 41-24 defeat inflicted on them by the Lions the last time the sides met in 2001.
“We have to be big. We can’t hope just to contain them and we can’t hold anything back,” he said.
As well as wanting to beat the Lions to satisfy his own competitive urge, Cheika also knows that victory on Saturday would give the Australian national side a huge boost ahead of the 1st test next week.
“We need to try and put some doubt in the Lions’ minds before the following Saturday and help Australia’s cause,” he added to rugby betting news pundits from Bet365.
Saturday’s match promises to be a step up in class and physicality for the Lions. Whilst there is no doubt that they have the ability to defeat the Waratahs, their lack of real competitive action may inhibit them and if Cheika’s men can bully the Lions early then they could be in for a famous victory, a point worth noting by fans placing a bet on rugby.
