New Zealand Rugby Union chief, Steve Tew, has revealed that All Blacks and Crusaders star Richie McCaw can’t wait to return to action.
The 32-year-old, who has been named as the world player of the year on three occasions, has not played any rugby so far this year in a bid to prolong his professional career.
He has not featured in any Super 15 rugby games in 2013 and also sat out New Zealand’s recent 3-0 series win against France as he attempts to manage his workload so that he can play for the All Blacks in the 2015 World Cup.
McCaw, who captained New Zealand to victory in the 2011 World Cup, looks set to return to action in the next few weeks for the Crusaders before starring for his country in the first Rugby Championship Test against Australia in August.
He is training again and, according to Tew: "Richie's in good shape. He's come back from his break refreshed and raring to go.
"It could have gone one of two ways, he might have gone away and decided enough is enough. But he's come back and he wants to be in the All Blacks again.
"Richie's effectively had long-service leave and we've been happy to pay him during that period."
However, McCaw may not necessarily return in his favoured number seven slot as Sam Cane appears to have been earmarked to take the openside flank role.
Cane starred in that position during the three Tests against France and impressed rugby betting pundits in the role.
McCaw's return means at least two players from the 32-man squad that was picked for the French series will be left out when a new squad is named for the four-nation Rugby Championship, which also includes Australia, South Africa and Argentina.
