England’s hopes of winning a famous Grand Slam this year have been rocked slightly by the news fly-half, Owen Farrell, will miss their Round Four match with Italy this weekend though injury.
Farrell has been instrumental to England’s fortunes these Championships but picked up a thigh strain in the Red Rose’s 23-13 win over France at Twickenham. The Saracens star was in inspired mood that day, kicking four penalties and instructing the team well going forward.
Unfortunately, this muscle strain has proven too much for Farrell to risk against Italy and England’s coaching staff have decided it is best he should sit out the tie.
“Owen’s still got the quad injury which I want to make sure has settled down completely,” said head coach, Stuart Lancaster. “We’re pretty confident that Owen will be fit for next week.”
Indeed, England will miss their fly-half but can count themselves lucky they only face Italy in Round Four and not the resurgent Welsh lying in wait later this month. Six Nations betting minnows, Italy, started the Six Nations superbly with a 23-18 win over France but humbling defeats to Scotland and Wales put them in their place.
If ever England could choose to have an injury crisis, it is against the Azzurri and replacement fly-half, Toby Flood, should prove more than capable of taking the reins against this much-weaker opponent.
Granted, the pundits on Betfair Rugby would rather have Farrell in the side but his absence isn’t as bad as it could be. In fact, the break from action may be a blessing in disguise for England, who will have a fully-fit fly ready for action against Wales in the last game – a clash that could earn Lancaster a famous Grand Slam.
