Springbok legend Bryan Habana may have signed a big money move to join up with Jonny Wilkinson and co at Toulon next season but he has sent a reminder out to South Africa coach Heyneke Meyer that he is still available for international selection if required.
Habana is the latest in a long line of international stars who has moved to the French Top 14 competition in search of the high wages that are on offer. The trend has been a worrying one for fans who know how to bet on rugby.
Most foreign imports into the French league, such as Wilkinson and Welsh full back Lee Byrne, have had to accept that they will not be selected for their country whilst playing abroad but Habana has made it clear to his new club that international commitments come first for him.
"That is one negotiable I made sure the guys over there [at Toulon] put in my contract," he said. "I will never give up on South African rugby, that Springbok jersey means so much to me,” the 30 year old added.
Whether Meyer will be keen for Habana to fly back and forth from France to represent South Africa in the forthcoming Rugby Championship remains to be seen but the Springboks record breaking try scorer is keen to ensure that the coach has plenty to think about.
“My body is feeling good at the moment and hopefully I can continue playing the type of rugby I have been playing over the last couple of weeks and the coach deems it good enough that I can be selected,” he said to rugby betting pundits on the bet365 website.
Whether or not Habana does return for the Springboks in their first game against Argentina on 17th August, his availability will certainly give them a boost and whoever comes in to take his place on the wing will know that they will have to give a huge performance to ensure that they prevent him from reclaiming his test jersey.
