ACT Brumbies backs coach Stephen Larkham has warned his young side that they must concentrate on the game in hand and not get carried away with trying to live up to past achievements if they are to progress through the Super 15 play offs.
In the early days of Super Rugby, the Brumbies were a force to be reckoned with, and a regular favourite in the rugby betting; they made the play offs every year between 2000 and 2004, winning the Championship in 2002 and 2004. Since then, however, they have found the competition tough going and this will be their first appearance in the play offs since their win nine years ago.
Larkham, who masterminded the Brumbies dominance in the early 2000’s, knows that the challenge of play off rugby is new to many of his players and he is keen that they don’t seek to compare themselves to the players of his generation.
'It's not a [regular season] game any more, it's different to what we've come up against in the last nine years,'' Larkham said. ''We can reflect on the history of the Brumbies, but this is a new team,” he added, recognising the fact that only four of the current side have play off experience.
Victory on Sunday against the Free State Cheetahs would leave the Brumbies just one game away from the Super 15 final but Larkham, who won over 100 caps for Australia including appearances in the 1999 and 2003 World Cup finals is keen for his side to take each game as it comes.
''It's do or die, there's everything to play for. It doesn't matter what we've done in the past or where we've come from, it's all about one game,'' the 39 year old said.
The Brumbies may lack big game experience on the field but, in Larkham, they have a man who has achieved almost all that it is possible to achieve in rugby sat on their bench.
If Larkham can help to keep his side cool and pass on some of his experience to the young Brumbies then fans who bet on rugby may well have something to sing about once more come the end of the season.
