British and Irish Lions assistant coach Andy Farrell believes the deciding Test with Australia is too close to call but that the hosts aren’t in the driving seat following their series-levelling victory at Melbourne.
With the two teams now heading to Sydney for an enthralling winner-takes-all clash, the Lions coaching staff will have to lift this squad for what will be a huge final game of the series. Fans who bet on rugby have also revealed their delight at the match-up.
Farrell has admitted going into the third and final game of the series with the score at 1-1 is probably a fair reflection of how level the opening two Tests have been between the two sides.
But the former England international has dismissed talk the rugby betting is with Australia going into the Sydney game on Saturday.
"I’m proud of the way we stuck at it. We were lucky to get away with a win in the first game and in the second game we could have won. After those two games 1-1 is a fair way to look at the series,” admitted Farrell.
"We all realise it's the biggest game of our lives and we'll see what comes of it. I wouldn't say Australia are in the driving seat. I'd say they're very pleased - it was a do or die situation for them and they rose to the challenge.”
The second Test certainly took it out of the Lions squad in terms of injuries, none more so than flanker Sam Warburton, who was forced from the field in the second half with a hamstring problem which could now rule the tourists’ captain out of the final game of the series.
