Ireland’s Jonathan Sexton and England’s Owen Farrell are the only two specialists fly-halves in the current British and Irish Lions squad and both will be determined to prove themselves ahead of that opening Test against Australia on June 22.
It was a surprise to see that Lions head coach Warren Gatland and his management team decided to select only two No.10s but of course they did speak with Toulon star Jonny Wilkinson, who decided he could not commit to the full tour Down Under.
We may still see Wilko in the famous red jersey should anything happen to either Sexton or Farrell on tour but the real battle for the starting role at 10 will be between the two youngsters.
Ireland endured a disappointing Six Nations championship this season and that was mainly down to the loss of Sexton to injury.
The Leinster star, who will be joining Racing Metro this summer, suffered a hamstring injury in their defeat to England and had to watch from the sidelines for the remainder of the tournament.
Farrell enjoyed a strong campaign with England, who were only denied the title and a Grand Slam following their heavy defeat to Wales in Cardiff.
Both players have excellent kicking games although most Lions rugby betting tips writers think Sexton might just have a bit more about him with the ball in hand.
That could just give the Irishman the edge for that starting Test role, as he will be able to unleash what is set to be an exciting Lions backline.
Of course both players will have to stake their claims in the warm-up games before the first Test against the Wallabies in Brisbane but either way the Lions will have a strong playmaker at 10 for the series.
