New British and Irish captain Sam Warburton has sounded an early battle cry after insisting he wants an unbeaten team to return home from Australia this summer.
The Lions captain was speaking at a press conference following Warren Gatland’s squad selection on Tuesday, which includes 15 Welshmen and 10 Englishmen, and rugby betting fans are already getting excited about the coming tour.
“I’ll go out there with the intention of winning every match,” said the new captain to the betting news. “It’s not something that’s been done before so that will be a great challenge to set the players.”
Indeed, there is a reason no Lions team has ever gone undefeated and that’s because the tour is one of the most strenuous two months in world sport. To play as a cohesive team over the 10 games (seven practice and three Tests) is a difficult task to master but to win as well takes a strong captain and unity behind him.
Warburton should have this. He has experienced heads in Brian O’Driscoll and Leigh Halfpenny behind while Alun Wyn Jones and Gethin Jenkins beside him both have Lions experience.
Their fly-halves, Owen Farrell and Jonny Sexton, are two of the best in the world and will compete for that one place on the field, while the fact Chris Robshaw, the England captain, failed to make the squad proves just how strong this pack is.
Playing Australia after seven practice games won’t be easy and Warburton must quickly realise his comments will be taken as red by many fans and pundits alike.
Expectations are always high for a Lions tour but this particular summer they look set to be bigger than ever. Quite simply Gatland has an impressive side and although there is not experience in depth there is quality – the main asset needed when facing six weeks Down Under.
Bet365’s new in-play bet offer has plenty of incentives for rugby fans to gamble on the Lions this spring.
