Panthers secure Idris coup 20 views 0 Comments 0 Images

The Penrith Panthers have secured a huge coup following the signing of former Australian centre Jamal Idris from the Gold Coast Titans, with Brad Tighe heading in the opposite direction as part of the deal.

According to the bet365 news website, Idris had been in talks with the Panthers for a number of weeks after making the decision to seek a move back to Sydney for personal reasons. The news is a huge boost for the Panthers leading into the 2014 NRL season, coming on the back of a promising 2013 season in which the club narrowly missed out on the playoffs.

Idris made a name for himself with Canterbury during a four-year spell, making his State of Origin debut for NSW in the 2010 series and scoring a try in his only Test for Australia the following year. After signing with the Titans in 2012, a leg injury restricted to the centre to just 35 appearances for Gold Coast during his two seasons at the club.

Talks with the Titans management at the end of the 2013 season between Idris and the club resulted in the player being given permission to seek a move back to the Sydney area, and Penrith wasted little time in snapping up the 23-year old ahead of the new season and adding one of the NRL’s most dynamic centres to their squad.

Penrith have bolstered their squad so far this off-season, signing Brisbane halfback Peter Wallace, Dragons five-eighth Jamie Soward, Warriors forward Elijah Taylor, Sharks back-rower Tyrone Peachey and experienced Manly prop Brent Kite. The addition of Idris further strengthens the Panthers ahead of the new season, boosting the club’s rugby betting odds on the bet365 website for the play-offs.

Panthers Executive General Manager Phil Gould admitted the club’s delight at being able to sign Idris.

“It is a major coup to recruit a player of such a high profile and tremendous ability. Jamal will be a wonderful acquisition for Penrith, both on and off the field”.
